An outstanding athlete at St. Mary’s High School in Bismarck, ND, Steve Clooten enrolled at the University of Mary in 1994 as a transfer from the University of Wyoming. At the University of Mary, Steve had an immediate impact on the Marauder football program.

He served the team as a captain and led the Marauders through two very successful, consecutive seasons. During the seasons of 1994 and 1995, the Marauders recorded 17 wins and in the 1995 season, Steve and the Marauders made it to the NAIA Semi-Finals in Washington. Steve earned All-Conference Honors in 1994 and 1995, was named Most Valuable Defensive Player for the Marauders and was also named First Team All-American in 1995. Steve is currently ranked fourth in the Marauder Single Season Record Book for tackles with 117. These tackles were recorded during the 1995 season.

Steve’s accomplishments on the football field came from a strong work ethic that all athletes strive for. His leadership was marked with a level of intensity that Steve maintained during practice and competition. Because of his accomplishments both in football and everyday life, Steve is the third Marauder football player to be named to the Marauder Hall of Fame.

Steve is currently managing an elk ranch north of Bismarck. He and his wife, Sandy (Wagner), also a University of Mary graduate, live in Bismarck.
