Making the jump from her hometown of Casper, WY, to Bismarck, ND, Mello immediately stepped into the UMary starting lineup as a freshman in 2005, the Marauders final season transitioning to NCAA Division II. In the Marauders first year competing in the NSIC, UMary captured the 2006 league postseason tournament, all by identical scores of 1-0. Mello scored the lone goal in the semifinals and added the helper in the championship game. One of the league’s leading scorers with five goals despite playing defense, she earned honorable mention All-NSIC honors and all-tournament team recognition. The Marauders repeated as NSIC tournament team champions her junior season in 2007 and earned a spot in the NCAA national tournament for the first and only time in program history. UMary tied the team record for wins in a season with 16 as Mello struck for six goals and added four assists for 16 points – 5th most in the NSIC. For her efforts Mello earned NSCAA/adidas 1st team All-Region honors, 2nd team Daktronics All-Central Region recognition, and was named to the All-NSIC first team. Mello led the Marauders to another winning season as a senior in 2008 and earned NSCAA/adidas 3rd team All-Region honors, landed on the All-NSIC 2nd team and claimed NSIC all-academic team recognition.
