Dear Student-Athlete:
On behalf of the University of Mary Sports Medicine staff, we welcome you to Marauder Athletics. We would like to share some important information with you regarding our Sports Medicine Policies and Procedures, and the paperwork we need from you on your journey as a Marauder Student-Athlete. Health History and Physical must be on University of Mary forms. This paperwork can be found on our website(goumary.com - Inside Athletics, Sports Medicine) You may have received these forms from your coach as well.
Our Sports Medicine staff consists of full-time Certified Athletic Trainers (ATCās), part-time ATCās, Sanford Health assigned ATCās and Physicians. We do assign an athletic trainer to every team. Preventative care, treatment and rehabilitation that is carried out by our Athletic Training staff is not billed to insurance.
Important Insurance Information
THE UNIVERSITY OF MARY DOES NOT PROVIDE ANY PRIMARY OR SECONDARY MEDICAL INSURANCE COVERAGE. All Student Athletes are required to have personal medical insurance, either their own, or through their parent/guardian. The University of Mary does not recommend or promote any specific health plans or insurance providers. This is the responsibility of the student-athlete or parents.
- Please familiarize yourself with the rules/requirements of the primary insurance policy under which you are covered. It is important that your medical insurance policy covers you for non-injury medical care such as illnesses, infections, and other medical conditions. Athletes will need to pay out of pocket if insurance does not cover them in our area.
- It is advisable to let your insurance company know that you are traveling away from home for educational reasons. This is a way to identify coverage in Bismarck.
- Check with your insurance company to see if they require you to go to a certain healthcare provider.
- Referrals to the appropriate health care professionals will be determined by the sports medicine staff.
- We will help with referrals and work to get you into a provider that will accept your insurance, if there is one in the area.
- Any injuries or illnesses that require being seen at a clinic will be billed to insurance or will be self-pay, if insurance does not cover. We do not have access to x-rays, scans or imaging on campus. These cases will be referred to a clinic in town. We will work together to provide the best comprehensive care for our student athletes!
Student-athletes and parents should be aware of the following issues regarding appropriate coverage:
- Health insurance is mandatory. There are several options available to U.S. students, including coverage under a parentās policy until age 26, or by purchasing coverage through the exchange at www.healthcare.gov.
- Be aware of the limitations of a managed care health plan. Most of the athletic health care we provide and assist with is non-emergency care, therefore a plan that covers Emergency Room care only is not appropriate coverage. If you are out of network, you will be required to follow the policies of your primary insurance.
a. International student-athletes - make sure that you have a policy that will cover you in Bismarck, ND, USA.
In the event of an injury or illness, return to play decisions are made by the University of Mary Sports Medicine Staff and team Physician(s). If an athlete and/or parent(s) wish to use a different physician or have a second opinion, that is your choice, however, please keep in mind that if there are any conflicts, the final authority for determining any student-athleteās return to play will be the University of Mary Sports Medicine Staff and/or team physician(s).
