An advocate of the important role athletics can play in the development of a University, Jerry Fischer was a key figure in building the University of Mary athletic program from one team to as many as 19. A graduate from Dickinson State University who earned a master’s degree at the University of North Dakota, Fischer served one year as a fulltime instructor at the University of Mary and 32 years as Vice President for Financial Affairs. In his final two years at Mary he was the first Executive Vice President. During 35 years of service at UMary Fischer was responsible for the construction of the athletic fields, the first field house, and two additions onto the activity center. He also chaired the committee that lead to the recommendation to move UMary to the NCAA. A true Marauders fan, early in his employment at the University Fischer also assisted Hall of Fame coach and athletic director Al Bortke as a part-time basketball coach for several years.
