Dave Barton, a native of Cincinnati, OH, came to Mary College in 1974 after a highly successful two year basketball career at Bismarck Junior College. While at BJC, Barton was twice named to the Mon-Dak All-Conference Basketball Team, establishing himself as an outstanding player and as the top recruit of coaches Al Bortke and Neal Kalberer. As a Marauder, he still ranks in the top 19 of the all-time scoring leaders with 734 points in two seasons in an era when three-point play was unheard of. Barton holds the number 12 spot on the all-time assist leaders, handing out 217 assists (over 100 each season). He also ranks 20th on the all-time rebounding leaders with 301.

In 1976, Barton graduated from Mary College with a major in business administration and minors in physical education and coaching. He accepted a teaching/coaching position in Anamoose, ND, quickly establishing himself as a top notch coach. The boys’ basketball team won the District Championship during the 1977-78 season and the girl’s team took the Conference and District Championships three straight years in a row (1977-79). Following the 1979 season, Barton left coaching and embarked on a career in business.
