ALLENDALE MI and MOORHEAD, MN – Racing on the site of the upcoming national champions,
Ida Narbuvoll and
Steven Brown posted record-breaking performances for the University of Mary women's and men's track & Field teams. The two seniors both broke the Marauders records in the 5000 meter run on Friday's opening night of the two-day Grand Valley State Extra Weekend Meet.
Narbuvoll outraced the field to win the highly-competitive 5K with a time of 16:03.40. An NCAA automatic qualifying time, the Norwegian native won the event by nearly 12 seconds. Narbuvoll presently ranks fourth in the nation. The previous record was 16:23.28 in 2017 by three-time national champion Alexis Zeis.
This is the second time this year Narbuvoll has broken one of Zeis' outdoor marks. Earlier this spring Narbuvoll posted the best time ever recorded in North Dakota in the 10,000 meter run to automatically qualify for the national championships.
Brown broke the UMary men's record in the 5K with a stellar time of 14:20.60. The NCAA provisional qualifying mark beat the Marauders previous record by over 17 seconds, set by
Derek Myers in 2017.
Racing in an incredibly fast field featuring several NCAA Division I and unattached runners, Brown finished 28
th overall. Ahead of Brown was 10 NCAA DI and unattached athletes. Of the 65 runners that completed the race, 25 posted NCAA automatic or provisional times.
The 8
th ranked UMary women's team also featured several other runners who combined to post four NCAA provisional qualifying marks.
- Lexus Lovan placed third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.87 seconds.
- Elizabeth Acheson claimed second in the 800 with a time of 2:11.65, her personal outdoor best time.
- Taylor Hestekin and Taryn Ceglowski both provisionally qualified in the 1500 meter run. Hestekin finished 6th overall in 4:29.09 and Ceglowski's time of 4:32.27 was 8th overall.
Additionally,
Courtney Dembrowski was third in the 400 meter run (1:00.56) and finished seventh in the 800 meter run (2:16.98).
Bree Erickson was 12
th in the 1500 at 4:39.40.
Lacey Feist ran the 5000 in 17:12.66 to place 22
nd and just missed the provisional qualifying standard. It was her personal best time by 22 seconds.
Hestekin and Ceglowski would finish 1-2 in the 800 with times of 2:15.35 and 2:17.58, respectively.
The Marauders quartet of
Alli McCoy,
Ava Grimm,
Chriss-Ann Thomas and Acheson won the 4x400 meter relay with a clocking of 3:50.74.
The UMary men also had several strong performances.
Isaac Huntington claimed the 400 meter run title with a clocking of 49.92.
Drew Olson finished second in the 100 meter finals with a time of 10.70.
The Marauders took three of the top four slots in the 200 meter finals among collegiate runners.
Logan Myers placed second with a mark of 21.71, just ahead of Olson's time of 21.81.
Isaac Huntington placed fifth overall at 21.98.
Grand Valley State will host the NCAA Division II outdoor championships on May 27-29.
The Marauders also had several big performances Saturday at the Ron Masanz Classic hosted by MSU Moorhead in Moorhead, MN.
D'Andra Morris and
Cali Modglin posted big numbers in the triple jump while placing 1-2. Morris, who owns the top effort in NCAA Division II this season, exploded for an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 12.91 to capture the title. It is the second time she has posted an auto qualifying effort this season. Modglin followed with a top mark of 12.01m, a provisional qualifying effort.
Headliners for the UMary women:
- Starlynn Costa (11:19.95) and Abigail Jones (11:40.15) went 1-2 in the 3000m steeplechase
- Morgan Hertz cleared the 400 meter hurdles in 1:02.76 to place second
- D'Andra Morris cleared the bar at 1.63m to tie for 2nd in the high jump and leaped 5.39 meters to place third in the long jump
- Paige Ziegler finished fourth in the 100 meter hurdles (15.23)
- Kayla Ogle placed 4th in the 800 meter run (2:17.75)

In a final tune-up before the Northern Sun championships, the Marauders will compete in the DSU Last Chance Meet in Dickinson, ND, on Thursday, May 6.
