BISMARCK, ND – Looking to continue building on their strong start to the season, the University of Mary men's and women's indoor track & field teams next take on the challenge of the University of North Dakota Open on Saturday, January 28.
Held inside the Pollard Athletic Center on the UND campus in Grand Forks, ND, field events commence at 11 am with events on the track slated to start at 1 pm.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend at the Jim Emmerich Alumni Invite, both teams generated exciting efforts. For the men, Emmerich highlights included:
- The Marauders quartet of Aleix Garbajosa, Jorgen Paulson, Akil Howell and Raheem Taitt-Best combined for a time of 3:17.29. Their time was an NCAA Division II qualifying effort that ranks 21st in the country.
- Paulson and Brendon Hoyte placed in the top eight of the 60 meter dash. Paulson finished 6th in the finals with a time of 6.94 seconds. Hoyte placed 8th in the finals after recording a time of 6.90 seconds in the preliminaries. They were the only NCAA D2 runners to earn a spot in the finals.
- Taitt-Best blazed his way to fourth place in the 400 finals with a mark of 48.69 seconds. The best individual finish of the day for UMary, Taitt-Best just missed the NCAA qualifying standards by .10 seconds. Howell finished 10th overall at 49.77 seconds. They were the only two NCAA D2 runners in the top 12.
- Garbajosa broke the school record in the 800 meter run. He finished 6th in the 800 with a time of 1:52.98 and missed the NCAA qualifying standard by .25 seconds. The old mark was 1:53.49 by Teegan Olson in 2018.
The UMary women's highlights at the Emmerich Invite included:
- Alyssa Becker recorded an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 9:52.20 in the 3000 meter run and placed 3rd in the event behind a pair of NCAA Division I competitors… Becker has posted NCAA qualifying times in two events this season She ranks 12th in the 3K and 17th nationally in the 5K.
- Arianna Passeri placed in the top seven of two events. She was third in the long jump, generating an NCAA qualifying mark of 5.85 meters, and placed 7th in the 60 meter dash.
- Danalee Brock had the Marauders best individual finish on the day when she placed second in the 600 with a time of 1:37.24.
- A'Lena Chaney scored team points with a 5th place finish in the triple jump and an 8th place finish in the 60 meter hurdles.
RECORD PERFORMANCE
Aleix Garbajosa broke the men's school record in the 800 meter run at the Emmerich Invite. He finished 6th in the 800 with a time of 1:52.98 and missed the NCAA qualifying standard by .25 seconds. The old mark was 1:53.49 by Teegan Olson in 2018.
