Wrestling Heads To Minot For The First Road Trip Of The Season

BISMARCK, ND - The University of Mary wrestling team takes their first road trip of the season when they take on Minot State University on Friday, January 15, at 4 pm.

The Marauders were originally scheduled to visit Southwest Minnesota State University on Thursday, Jan. 14, while the Beavers were to face St. Cloud State University. Both matches were cancelled due to COVID-19 testing protocol issues for SMSU and SCSU, opening up the opportunity for UMary and Minot State to face off against one another.

This contest will be a non-conference match. The Marauders will host Minot State on Thursday, January 28, at 7 pm.

The Marauders lost their season opener against #1 ranked St. Cloud State University. UMary's sole victory came from Max Bruss as he defeated #9 174-pounder Devin Donovan in a thrilling contest that Bruss won by a 1-0 decision. Bruss earned his one point in the third period after using an escape.

Minot State is coming off a 31-12 loss to Minnesota State University, Mankato. Last year the Marauders were defeated by the Beavers 19-16 on the road.

UMary returns two wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships last season, Phillip Springsteen and Braydon Huber. Huber is ranked 5th for the 157 IBS weight class in the National Wrestling Coaches Association preseason rankings. Springsteen finished second in the NCAA Division II Super Regional V as he earned the eighth seed at the 2020 NCAA Championships.

The Marauders finished just outside the top 25 in the NWCA preseason rankings, receiving ten votes which were tied for the most out of any team not ranked.

The UMary junior varsity team will get a chance to compete on Friday for the first time this season as several freshmen will make their Marauders debut.

The Marauders went 4-4 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference last season and finished fifth in the NSIC. The Beavers, led by head coach Evan Forde, went 2-7 in the conference and finished sixth in the NSIC.

UMary's next match will be on Thursday, January 21 against MSU Moorhead at 7 pm in the McDowell Activity Center.
