Marauders edge Beavers to capture 1st Battle for the Barrel travelling trophy match

BISMARCK, ND - The first Battle of the Barrel traveling trophy brought out the best in the both the University of Mary and Minot State University. In front of a raucous crowd, the Marauders edged the Beavers 16-15 in a match that came down to the closing seconds.

Trailing by two team points, redshirt freshman Phillip Springsteen edged Carlos Toledano 10-8. Ranked 11th in the country at 165, Springsteen recaptured a lead late in the match and held off a final charge in the closing seconds to give the Marauders the victory and the Barrel trophy.

This was the Marauders third victory in their last four outings where UMary needed a win in the final match of the night.

The Marauders grabbed an early lead. Opening the dual at 174, Austin Eichmann claimed a 6-4 decision to jumpstart the home team. It was UMary's only win in the first half of the match as Minot State captured the next four weight classes to lead 12-3.

UMary's fortunes turned in the first match out of intermission. Tate Barnhardt, ranked 9th in the country at 133, dominated Michael Rangel in a 10-1 major decision. The only bonus point win of the night, Barnhardt delivered a takedown just before the final buzzer sounded. Minot State challenged the ruling but the call was upheld in what proved to be the most pivotal ruling of the night.

A Minot State win by Zach Berry at 157 to give the Beavers a 15-13 lead set up the final match of the nigh between Springsteen and Toledano.

The Marauders, who set a team record with their fourth Northern Sun win of the season, conclude the regular season on Wednesday, February 14, when Northern State University makes a Valentine's Day trip to the McDowell Activity Center.
