BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary wrestling team set new program standards in a 30-12 rout of Northern State University in the final dual of the season for the Marauders. After an evening that started with a flurry and ended with a boom, UMary finished the regular season with a winning record overall and in the Northern Sun for the first time as an NCAA program.
UMary closes the schedule with an 8-6 mark overall in duals and a 5-3 record in the NSIC to tie for fourth place. In addition to a winning record, the eight wins ties the school mark for victories in the NCAA era. The five wins in league action is also a program record. Additionally this is the first time UMary will finish in the upper half of the conference. The Marauders began competing in NCAA Division II and the NSIC in 2006-07.
Nate Humann opened the evening in spectacular fashion for the Marauders. Wresting at home in front of an exuberant crowd and on statewide television, the redshirt junior registered 13 takedowns to defeat Juan Castellanos by technical fall 5:44 into the match. The Bismarck, ND, posted six takedowns in each of the first two periods and held a 26-10 lead when the match was stopped. The only points Humann allowed were by escape.
The Wolves sandwiched a pair of forfeits around a major decision by
Hunter Eckert at 141. The junior from Bismarck, ND, scored a late takedown for the differential needed to snare a bonus point victory 11-3 over Josh Moore.
The forfeits at 133 and 149 kept two nationally-ranked Marauders on the sidelines, #9
Tate Barnhardt and #8
Rudy Guillen. The four straight decisions for UMary proved insurmountable as the Marauders led 21-0 after four matches.
Northern State rallied to win the next three matches, including a 4-2 sudden victory at 157 for Tanner Olson over
Jared Reis and a 10-5 loss for #11
Phillip Springsteen, who hadn't lost a match since the middle of December.
Jackson Schichel regained the Marauders winning ways with a 9-7 sudden victory decision over David Murphy at 184. The freshman rallied in the third period behind a takedown to earn the extra session before closing the match on a takedown in the first extra stanza.
Dominic Tudor closed out the Marauders win with a decisive win at 285 when he slammed Justice Horn to the mat and posted a pin a scant 17 seconds into the final match of the evening.
The Marauders, winners in four of their final five matches of the year, next compete at the NCAA Division II Super Regional 3 on February 23-24 in St. Cloud, MN. The Marauders will be able to enter one wrestler in each weight class. The top four competitors in each classification will advance to the NCAA championships in Cedar Rapids, IA, on March 9-10.
