#22 Marauders wrestlers host #1 Huskies on Saturday, January 20

BISMARCK, ND - One weekend after facing four teams receiving national recognition in one day, the task at hand gets no easier for the 22nd ranked University of Mary wrestling team. The Marauders host #1 St. Cloud State University at 2 pm on Saturday, January 20, in the McDowell Activity Center.

The Marauders enter the weekend with a 4-4 record overall in duals. Facing impressive competition, the last seven matches have come against teams either ranked nationally or who are receiving votes. Additionally the first three UMary home duals came against #21 Concordia College (NCAA Division III), #9 Upper Iowa University and #19 Minnesota State University, with the Marauders defeating both the Cobbers and the Peacocks.

St. Cloud State will provide UMary its biggest challenge of the year. The Huskies own six straight Northern Sun championships and haven't lost a conference dual since falling 18-13 to Augustana on January 27, 2011. SCSU won consecutive national titles in 2015 and 2016 and placed second last spring. Eight Huskies are ranked nationally, including #1 Larry Bomstad (157), #2 Bret Velasquez (125), #4 Jarred Oftedahl (141), #5 James Pleski (149), #8 Travis Holt (165), #7 Kolton Eischens (174), #9 Vince Dietz (197), and #10 Lawrence Phillips (285).

The Marauders have a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers. Rudy Guillen is 4th in the country at 149 while Tate Barnhardt is 7th at 133.

A redshirt sophomore from Duluth, GA, Guillen is 14-2 this season, including 7-2 against NCAA Division II foes. He has a team-leading 54 takedowns and has been taken down himself just six times. He also has an 8-0 advantage in 4-point nearfalls over his opposition and owns four wins by major decision, two by technical fall and one by pin.

Barnhardt, who has claimed NSIC Wrestler of the Week honors this season along with Guillen, is 19-5 overall with a 14-4 record against D2 rivals. The Bismarck, ND, native and St. Mary's Central High School product has racked up a 38-11 edge in takedowns this year. Barnhardt has 13 4-point nearfalls and five wins by pin, four by technical fall and two via major decision.

Barnhardt is compiling impressive career numbers. Since 2011, he owns the most takedowns in the program with 147 and leads in pins at 24. His 69 wins is second during that span only to Trevor Johnson's 78 (2012-14).

Also off to a great start this season is Phillip Springsteen. Last Saturday at the Midwest Duals he captured all four of his matches, including three by fall. In his previous effort at the Midwest Classic, the redshirt freshman went 4-2 and finished seventh, earning the Most Falls honor with three pins. Nationally Springsteen is ranked fifth in pins with eight (against NCAA Division II opposition only).

For the season Springsteen is 18-5 overall and 13-5 against NCAA Division II opposition. He owns ten pins and has two other wins by major decision.

Dom Tudor is the fourth UMary wrestler with double digit wins this season, forging a record of 13-7 at 285. The sophomore has 18 takedowns and seven pins.

Projected to make his Marauders debut this weekend is Jared Reis. A senior from Napoleon, ND, Reis transfers to UMary after graduating from NCAA Division I Oregon State University. After winning three state titles for the Imperials, he redshirted as a freshman at OSU in 2012-13 before compiling a mark of 54-27 for the PAC 10 Beavers from 2013-16.
