Nelson, Houston post school records as Marauders claim second at Dragon Invite

WEST FARGO, ND – Headlined by a pair of school records, the University of Mary swimming team claimed second at the 2018 Dragon Invite. This is the best finish the Marauders have posted at an invitational.
 
UMary garnered 1,403.5 team points over 27 events. MSU Moorhead, the host of the event, captured first with 2,373 points. The Marauders finished as runner up just 1.5 points ahead of Northern State, which claimed third at 1,402 points. Augustana placed fourth, followed by Minnesota Morris and Concordia.
 
Claiming one of two Marauders titles on the day, Mackenzie Houston set a school record in the 50 yard butterfly. The freshman cut through the water in 26.78 seconds to establish the new Marauders standard.
 
After setting a school record in the 50 yard freestyle in the meet's opening session on Friday, Karyssa Nelson came back Saturday and established a new mark. She placed second in the event with her record time of 24.84 seconds.
 
Nelson would take second in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.51. Not far back was Abbey Zajdzinski in fifth place (1:01.97). Nelson wrapped up her weekend by placing third in the 100 yard freestyle (54.68).
 
Mary Williamson picked up the 1000 yard freestyle title in a time of 11:03.91. Kate Murphy finished fourth in 11:17.10.
 
Williamson later placed second in the 200 yard individual medley (2:17.43) with Alyssa Boese finishing third (2:18.70) and Houston fifth (2:16.97). The freshman also added a fourth place finish in the 500 yard freestyle (5:26.35).
 
In the Marauders best relay effort of the weekend, UMary took second in the 400 yard medley relay. Nelson Williamson. Houston and Boese combined for a time of 4:14.15.
 
Boese led the Marauders efforts in the 50 yard backstroke, finishing in 29.19 seconds for fourth place. She later tacked on a fifth place finish in the 100 yard IM (1:04.60).
 
In diving, Mariah Stewart improved to 8th place in the 1 meter board in just her second day competing with the Marauders.
 
UMary now returns home to host Northern State University on Saturday, January 20. The Marauders final home meet of the year starts at 2 pm at the BSC Aquatic and Fitness Center.
