BISMARCK, ND – For the second straight day,
Tate Barnhardt opened the scoring for the 23
rd ranked University of Mary wrestling team and
Phillip Springsteen posted another dominant win but the Marauders hopes for a second straight upset fell just short. Hosting #19 Minnesota State University, the Marauders dropped a hard-fought 23-13 decision to the Mavericks.
A day after upsetting #9 Upper Iowa, the Marauders looked for a similar result against the Mavericks. Both teams alternated wins through the first six weight classes before the Mavericks reeled off three straight victories in the upper weights, including two by bonus points, to clinch the match.
In an opening match at 125 that could have gone either way, UMary's
Nate Humann suffered a tough 6-5 loss to Andrew McFall. Humann led 4-2 after two before McFall parlayed a reversal and a takedown into the win. Humann valiantly attempted to escape from McFall in the closing minute but the Minnesota State grappler held tight to claim the win.
Just as he did the day before against Upper Iowa,
Tate Barnhardt posted the first win for UMary. The Bismarck, ND, native opened the scoring at 133 with a takedown of George Farmah in the second period. He kept his foe on the mat and began to build up riding time. Barnhardt chose neutral to start the third period and held off all scoring efforts by Farmah to win 3-0 after earning a point for riding time. While improving his record this season to 12-2 the St. Mary's Central graduate evened the match at 3-3.
The pivotal match of the day came at 141.
Hunter Eckert, leading on a takedown, came precariously close to pinning Louie Sanders. After a break for a video review for a nearfall call, Sanders reversed the table and pinned Eckert at 2:51.
Rudy Guillen, ranked second in the country at 149, put the Marauders back on the board at 149. In a tense match, the undefeated Guillen trailed Kyle Rathman 3-2 after the first period and 5-4 after two. Continuing to scrap, the UMary redshirt sophomore opened the third with an escape and followed with a takedown to move ahead 7-5. Rathman subsequently escaped to close within a point but couldn't knock Guillen off his feet. Guillen improved to 12-0 with the 7-6 win. Penalized a team point after the match, UMary pulled within 9-5.
With the pendulum swinging back to Minnesota State, the Mavericks claimed a 5-3 decision at 157.
Jordan Hegel grabbed a 3-2 lead after the opening period and maintained his lead into the third stanza. Daniel Close, opening the final period on the bottom, reversed position for two points and accumulated riding time for a 5-3 win and a 12-5 advantage.
Springsteen brought the Marauders back within striking distance with a dominant effort at 165. The redshirt freshman grabbed a quick 8-0 lead behind a takedown and a pair of nearfalls on the way to a 15-0 technical fall for five UMary team points.
The Mavericks created separation with three straight wins at 174, 184 and 197. Featuring nationally ranked grapplers at 184 and 197, MSU won both weight classes by 12-0 major decisions.
Dominic Tudor closed the day with a 4-1 win at 285 over Logan Linderbaum. The sophomore picked up all the points he needed with a takedown in the first period.
The Marauders next compete at the Midwest Classic in Indianapolis, IN, on Dec. 16-17.
