BISMARCK, ND – Setting an early tone, the 23
rd ranked University of Mary wrestling team delivered one devastating blow after another early in a 33-12 win over Concordia College, ranked 21
st in NCAA Division III. The Marauders posted two pins, a technical fall and a major decision in the first four matches and claimed six bonus point wins in the match.
The win is the first for the Marauders over the Cobbers in 29 seasons. UMary defeated Concordia 24-18 in the 1988-89 season. The Cobbers had won the last seven decisions with all meetings since the 2007-08 season.
Nate Humann set the tone in the opening match at 125. Holding a 6-4 lead over Jake Nohre entering the third period, the UMary junior took down his opponent and earned the pin as time expired in the match.
At 133,
Tate Barnhardt came out on fire, ending his match with a technical fall at 4:44 after building a 17-1 advantage. The junior from Bismarck, ND, posted a pair of four-point near falls in the first period over Aaron Dick and built a 12-1 lead. Barnhardt ended the match with an escape, a takedown and a 2-point near fall.
The excitement kept rolling at 141 as
Hunter Eckert ended the match in the first period at 2:15. Already up 10-2 on a 4-point near fall and two takedowns, the junior from Bismarck pinned Adam Pressler for the win and a 17-0 Marauders lead.
Ranked second in NCAA Division II at 149,
Rudy Guillen didn't disappoint Marauders fans in UMary's first home match. The junior from Duluth, GA, held a 6-2 lead through the second period before dominating Ben Baumgartner in the final period, piling on nine points to claim a 15-3 major decision.
The Cobbers earned their first win in an exciting match at 157 as Anthony Struntz claimed a 13-12 win over
Jakob Weisbrod.
Phillip Springsteen put the Marauders back on track in the first match after intermission. The redshirt freshman jumped all over Travis Deegan in the first period, rolling up eight unanswered points behind a pair of near falls and a takedown on the way to a 12-1 major decision.
In the lone overtime match of the night, freshman
Jackson Schichel pulled down Jonah Lange seconds into the extra period to claim a 5-3 sudden victory decision at 184.
The Marauders seventh win of the night featured
Dominic Tudor claiming victory by technical fall, ending the match at 6:24 after building a 20-5 lead over Bryce Kallenbach.
UMary, who entered the national poll for the first time in recent memory, next competes at the Dragon Open in Moorhead, MN, on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Marauders next dual is set for Dec. 9-10 when Upper Iowa and Minnesota State, both nationally ranked, visit the McDowell Activity Center.
