UMary's Werner wins Canadian U20 National Championship

OTTAWA, ON – Coming off an All-American freshman campaign, University of Mary track and field's Tayen Werner carried her momentum into the offseason in her home country of Canada. On Friday, Aug. 1, Werner was victorious in the U20 400m Dash at the Canadian Track and Field Championships.

Werner clocked in a personal best of 54.44 in Thursday's prelims, the best time in the field of 24, to advance to the championship. Her time in the finals was even better the following day, as she cut nearly a second off with a 53.46 to win by just 0.16 seconds. Her previous personal best was 54.65.

Werner was previously a provincial champion in the 400m in Saskatchewan in 2022 and can now add a national title to her resume.

In her first season at UMary, Werner was a member of the NSIC Champion 4x400m Relay team in both the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons. She also was the runner-up in the outdoor 400m for All-NSIC honors. The 4x400m Relay team went on to place 7th at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships to earn All-American status.
