PUEBLO, CO – A record-setting performance for the second straight day earned the University of Mary women's 4x400 meter relay team All-American honors. After breaking their own school record on Friday by over three seconds, the Marauders quartet of
Kelescia Downes,
Tayen Werner,
Tionce Walrond and
Sakena Massiah shaved another second off their record to place seventh at the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
This is the first time all four members of the Marauders relay team have earned All-American honors.
Using an impressive finish for the second straight race, UMary followed a similar path to All-American status to what had earned the Marauders a berth in the championship.
Sitting ninth in the nine-team final with half the race complete, the Marauders made their move in the third leg. Taking the baton from Werner, Walrond pushed the Marauders forward. Running the-fourth best split for the third leg with a time of 53:40, Walrond bumped up the Marauders one slot to eighth. Massiah then took it up another notch. After running an impressive third leg Friday, Massiah anchored the Marauders efforts Saturday. The Northern Sun Track Athlete of the Year posted the second-fastest time of the final 400 yards with a clocking of 51.55 seconds, pushing UMary forward another slot to seventh with a time of 3:35.17.
The Marauders broke their short-lived school record by 1.21 seconds. The same UMary quartet ran a time of 3:36.38 in the preliminaries on Friday to shatter their previous school record by 3.41 seconds.
This is the first UMary All-American relay performance since the Marauders 2021 4x400 squad of Nicolyn Brown, Julia Hammerschmidt, Monique McPherson and Abby Zastrow combined to place fifth in the nation.
