WEST FARGO, ND - The four-day 2023 NSIC Swimming & Diving Championships began Wednesday at the Hulbert Aquatic Center in West Fargo, North Dakota. The highlight of the night came with
Victoria Murillo winning the NSIC Championship in the 1000 yard freestyle final! Murillo was neck and neck for most of the race with Farida Maher of Concordia-St. Paul, but finished nearly two seconds ahead of Maher with a winning time of 10:16.09.
Murillo also beat the NCAA B standard time of 10:24.51. By claiming the gold medal, Murillo also gives UMary 20 team points for overall scoring.
The winning mark comes just 5.01 seconds shy of the school record set by
Andrea Lee at the 2022 NSIC Championships, but it is Murillo's best time in the event this season. This title also marks Murillo's 8th overall NSIC championship in her illustrious career in the orange and blue.
The Marauders also earned team points from solid performances in the opening-day relays. The evening session opened with three heats of finals in the 200 yard medley relay. UMary's team of
Teresa Cavanaugh,
Rylie Webb,
Jordn Wolsky, and
Breena DeLegge placed 10th with a time of 1:49.29. The quarter earned the Marauders 14 team points.
The 200 yard freestyle closed out day one of the 2023 NSIC Championships. UMary's team of DeLegge, Wolsky,
Madi Yonke, and Murillo swam for the season-best time of 1:37.48, earning 7th place and 24 overall team points.
The opening session of day one kicked off with the 200 yard IM prelims.
Breanna Lund raced the fastest preliminary time for the Marauders with 2:16.33, coming in at 25th place. Lund was one spot away from racing in the evening's finals session, 0.19 seconds behind the qualifying swimmer in front of her.
Mikayla Brackin finished shortly behind Lund with a time of 2:17.99.
Mariapocs Ruiz Martinez finished in 2:24.91.
Breena DeLegge earned a spot in the 50 free finals by racing 24.58 seconds in the prelims. DeLegge would later beat this time, placing third in the C final with a time of 24.52.
UMary Swimming returns to West Fargo for day two of the NSIC Championships Thursday morning, which feature the 100 fly, 400 IM, and 200 free prelim races starting at 10. The Marauders will then return for the finals of those races plus the 400 medley relay starting at 5:30 pm. There will be 1-meter diving prelims at 1 pm but no Marauders will compete.
