MANKATO, MN – An unprecedented fourth Northern Sun triple jump indoor championship for
D'Andra Morris and titles by
Ava Grimm and
Elizabeth Acheson led the University of Mary to a runner-up finish at the 2022 NSIC Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships.
The Marauders generated 115 points to place second, improving one place in the team standings from last winter. Minnesota State won the title with 243 points, followed by UMary, Augustana (106.33), Winona State (63), Minnesota Duluth (41), Sioux Falls (37), Concordia-St. Paul (32), Northern State (29), Wayne State (19), MSU Moorhead (16), St. Cloud State (13), Bemidji State (10.33), Minot State (7), Southwest Minnesota State (5.33) and Upper Iowa (3).
"Our ladies battled until the last event to take a runner-up finish as a team," said Marauders interim head coach
Cale Korbelik. "I was extremely pleased with the performances this weekend because so many of them were personal bests. We had so many people step up. There was a great balance of underclassman and upperclassman who made an impact."
In her final NSIC indoor meet, Morris had the best performance of her career in the triple jump, winning the event for the 4
th time with an NCAA qualifying mark of 12.87 meters. The All-American broke her own school record four times during the championships. All five of her countable marks would have won the NSIC title.
Additionally the senior from Kingston, Jamaica, broke the Northern Sun and facility records.
Grimm also broke a Myers Field House facility record while winning the 600 meter run with a time of 1:33.50. She claimed victory by over two seconds.
Acheson won the 800 meter run for the second straight year. The All-American registered a time of 2:11.39 for her third career NSIC indoor championship overall. She now ranks 7
th in the country in the 800.
The Marauders had a big day in the 800.
Courtney Dembrowski (2:14.28) placed 4
th and
Rachael Neu (2:20.11) claimed 8
th.
Taylor Hestekin,
Alyssa Becker,
Tereza Bolibruch and the 4x400 meter relay team earned All-NSIC honors on Saturday.
All-American
Taylor Hestekin earned her All-NSIC honors in the 1,000 meter run, placing 2
nd with a time of 2:55.91. Close behind was
Taryn Ceglowski (2:58.56) in 5
th place.
After taking 3
rd place for All-NSIC honors in the 5K on Friday,
Alyssa Becker had an even bigger performance Saturday in the 3,000 meter run. Becker claimed 2
nd in the 3K after posting an NCAA qualifying time of 9:50.40.
Bolibruch placed 3
rd in the 60 meter hurdles with an NCAA qualifying time of 8.65 seconds, her best mark this year.
In the final event of the weekend, the quartet of
Danalee Brock,
Morgan Hertz, Grimm and Acheson earned All-NSIC honors when they finished second in the 4x400 meter relay, combining efforts for a time of 3:54.43.
Cali Modglin joined Morris on the podium after placing 5
th in the triple jump with an NCAA qualifying effort of 11.98 meters.
Samoya Neil finished 7
th in the 60 meter dash with a clocking of 7.76 seconds at the first NSIC championship for the freshman.
The Marauders next compete at the NCAA indoor championships March 10-12 in Pittsburg, KS.
