SIOUX FALLS, SD – Facing their biggest challenge of the season,
Victoria Murillo and the University of Mary swimming team had several impressive performances at the 3-day Augustana Invitational.
Murillo broke one school record, picked up one victory and added a pair of runner-up finishes to headline UMary's efforts in a 13-team meet that included NCAA Division I competition. The format resembled the Northern Sun championship format with preliminary races in the morning followed by finals competition at night.
"I am very happy with the way the team swam during the meet," said Marauders head coach
Ryan Evans. "We had multiple scholar-athletes achieve lifetime best times and Victoria set a school record in the 200 freestyle and won the 1650 freestyle.
"With having limited time working with the team before the meet, I am walking away from this weekend with a much better understanding of the things we need to focus on in training so we can be better at conference. I am looking forward to a good block of training, and I am confident we will have big improvements at the end of the season. It's going to be an exciting couple of months for our team."
In the longest event of the week, Murillo outperformed the competition to win the 1650 freestyle with an impressive time of 17:20.27.
The 7-time Northern Sun champion finished second in the 200 free with a school-record time of 1:50.47. She also was the runner-up in the 500 free with a clocking of 5:00.75.
A finalist in four individual events, Murillo also had a 16
th place finish in the 100 free (52.78).
Senior
Breena DeLegge was one of three Marauders to earn a spot in an event final. She claimed 25
th in the 100 free (53.03) and grabbed 26
th in the 50 free.
Freshman
Jordn Wolsky combined a 12
th place effort in the 200 butterfly (2:12.84) with a 22
nd place finish in the 100 yard butterfly (58.45).
Breanna Lund finished the 400 yard IM in 4:53.94 to take 25
th place.
Racing in the 200 backstroke,
Teresa Cavanaugh took 26
th with a time of 2:14.83.
Mikayla Brackin (2:36.06) and
Korie Riely (2:36.19) went 26-27 in the 200 breaststroke. Additionally Brackin also placed 29
th in 200 butterfly (2:26.99).
Mariapocs Ruiz Martinez placed 26
th in the 200 butterfly (2:22.85).
Racing in the 1650,
Keely Lacina was 23
rd with a time of 20:03.40.
The Marauders also had a pair of 14
th place relay finishes.
In the 800 free relay, the combined forces of Murillo, DeLegge, Wolsky and
Michaela Desmond placed 14
th in 8:02.33.
The quartet of Murillo, Delegge, Desmond and
Madi Yonke were 14
th in the 200 free relay (1:38.59).
Overall the Marauders finished 7
th with 128 points.
UMary next competes at the Dragon Open in Fargo, ND, on January 13-14.
