Marauders wrap up road schedule this week with visits to BSU, SMSU

THIS WEEK
The University of Mary baseball team embarks on their final road swing of the regular season this week with visits to Bemidji, MN, and Marshall, MN. The Marauders will play a doubleheader at Bemidji State University on Wednesday, April 28. First pitch is set for 1:30 pm. UMary then visits Southwest Minnesota State University for a three-game set on Saturday and Sunday, May 1-2. Saturday's twin bill begins at 1:30 pm with Sunday's single 9-inning game begins at 12 noon.
 
ROAD AND HOME
After the Marauders wrap up their final five scheduled road games, UMary returns to close out its final five scheduled home games. St. Cloud State visits Municipal Ballpark for two games on Wednesday, May 5. Northern State then comes to town for a doubleheader on Friday, May 7, with a single game on Saturday, May 8, wrapping up the regular season. May 8 is also Senior Day for the Marauders.
 
PLAYOFF PUSH
Pursuing what would be the Marauders first Northern Sun playoff appearance in program history, the Marauders currently hold the eighth and final slot with ten games left to play. UMary has a record of 12-10 in league play. Closest behind the Marauders in ninth place is the University of Sioux Falls (12-15). Minnesota State tops the standings at 21-3, followed by Augustana (20-8), Minnesota Crookston (12-6), St. Cloud State (13-7), Minot State (15-9), Winona State (15-10) and Northern State (14-11)… Cloud State (13-7), Minot State (15-9), Winona State (15-10) and Northern State (14-11)… The 2021 NSIC Baseball Tournament is a two-week format. The tournament will begin on May 13-14 with a best of three game series hosted by the top four seeds (one 9-inning game Thursday and Friday with a second 9-inning game if necessary on Friday).
 
CONGRATULATIONS JAY FLAA
Former Marauders pitcher Jay Flaa has been called up to the Major Leagues by the Baltimore Orioles. A righthanded relief pitcher, the Mandan, ND native pitched for the University of Mary as a freshman in 2011. He started ten games for the Marauders, completed one, earned a victory and struck out 39 hitters in 49.1 innings. Flaa transferred to NCAA Division I North Dakota State University and was drafted by the Orioles in the in the 6th round of the 2015 draft. When he makes his first appearance Flaa will be the first former Marauders player to play in a Major League Baseball game. He will also be the first University of Mary student-athlete to play a game in any of the four major professional sports in America (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL).
 
RECORDS
The Marauders are 15-14 overall and 12-10 in Northern Sun play. UMary is 8th in the league standings… The BSU Beavers are 5-25 and 4-21… The SMSU Mustangs are 11-18 and 9-17.
 
LAST WEEK
After splitting a midweek doubleheader at Minot State the Marauders won two out of three games at home against Minnesota Duluth, winning game 1 10-0, losing the second 13-9, and claiming the third game 12-8.

The Marauders narrowly missed their second no-hitter of the season on Saturday when Austin Wagner, Mitch Oehme and Anthony Leedle held the Bulldogs to a single win in UMary's 10-0 win over Minnesota Duluth. Wagner was perfect through his five innings, retiring all 15 hitters he faced in the game. He struck out eight and recorded two outs on fly balls and five on ground balls while throwing less than 60 pitches. Oehme struck out two hitters and allowed a hit in a scoreless sixth inning. Liddle struck out two and walked one in a scoreless seventh inning to close out the win. Johnathan Draheim pitched a no-hitter against Upper Iowa earlier in the season.

Jonathan Draheim is a perfect 6-0 this season as the sophomore righthander has won all his starts. His six wins is a UMary NCAA-era (2007 and on) record for wins in a season. The previous record was five by Matt Medeiros (2010) and Jeff Skadeland (2013)… The school record for single season wins is 10 by Marauders Hall of Famer Ryan Astle in 2002.
 
DRAHEIM BY THE NUMBERS
Jonathan Draheim is 6-0 with a 2.70 ERA and 0.90 WHIP in 40 innings. In six starts he has allowed just 33 hits and 3 walks while striking out 28 hitters… He is two innings shy of six complete games… In NCAA D2 he ranks 6th in complete games (4), 4th in walks/9 innings (0.68), 22nd in wins (6), 27th in WHIP (0.90) and 17th in strikeouts-to-walks ratio (9.33)… Draheim's no-hit effort against Upper Iowa (4-0 win, 7 IP, 5Ks, 2 HBP, 0 BB, pitched six straight perfect innings to close game) was the fourth in school history (Roger Wuertz vs. Graceland College in 1998, Michael Allen vs. Minnesota-Crookston in 2007 and Shane Trattles vs. Penn State-Beaver in 2014)… he retired the first 16 batters he faced in his season-opener at Southwest Baptist and retired 19 straight hitters in his no-hitter against Upper Iowa in his no-hitter.

Paxton Miller has set a Marauders NCAA-era (2007 and on) record for saves in a season with four. The previous high was three by Chris Scott and Charles Bielejeski in 2019 and Travis Famias in 2012.
 
DEFENSE
The Marauders are 21st in the country and 1st in the NSIC with a .972 fielding percentage. UMary has made just 27 errors in 29 games.
 
POWER BALL
  • Through 29 games the Marauders have 32 home runs, tied with the 2010 team for the 2nd most homers in a season in the team's NCAA years. UMary is on pace to exceed the 37 the Marauders hit in 2008. The school record is 48 in 2000.
  • Ty Jones and Calvin James have both had a pair of two-homer games this season for the Marauders to tie the Marauders single-game NCAA-era school record. This has happened just 13 times since 2007. James accounts for three of the occurrences.
  • Ty Jones has eight home runs this season, tied for the 7th best mark of the Marauders NCAA era. Tyler Liffrig owns the top mark with 11 (2008 and 2009). Darius Barlas (2019) and Michael Feldman (2008) both connected for ten. Andy Leer and Liffrig both hit nine in 2009. Liffrig also had eight in 2007. The school record is 12 by Steve Laasko in 1998.
  • The Marauders blasted four solo shots in the 5-3 win at Concordia-St. Paul. The four home runs are the second-most the Marauders have hit in a game since beginning NCAA play in 2007, bested only by the six UMary hit against Upper Iowa on April 28, 2007.
 
ACE HIGH
Lefthander Austin Wagner, a transfer from NCAA Division I Abilene Christian, has had a trio of dominant outings in his five starts this season for the Marauders. For the season Wagner has a 2.95 ERA and a 0.89 WHIP covering 21.1 innings. He has 26 Ks and has allowed just 13 hits and six walks.
 
BOX SCORE GEMS
  • Andrew Brooks has allowed just four runs this season in 12 relief appearances spanning 13 innings of relief. Brooks has given up just seven hits and has struck out 20.
  • Calvin James is hitting .366 with a .449 on base percentage and is slugging .663 with a 1112 OPS to lead the Marauders in all four categories. He has 10 doubles, 1 triple, 23 runs scored, 6 home runs and 25 RBIs. He is in the Top 10 of the NSIC in hitting, slugging, doubles and home runs.
  • Derek Shoen owns a slash line of .320/.404/.557 and an OPS of 961. He has 7 doubles, 2 triples, 4 home runs and 17 RBIs in 27 games. Shoen also has started five games on the hill for UMary and has a 4.81 ERA covering 24.1 innings with 23 strikeouts.
  • Ty Jones has accumulated 2 doubles, 2 triples, 8 home runs and 21 RBIs on the season, posting a .602 slugging percentage and a 928 OPS. He also has 22 strikeouts in 19.1 innings on the hill, allowing just 13 hits and posting a 5.12 ERA.
  • C Tyrus Barclay moved into the leadoff slot in the Augie series and he has been on fire since the move. In seven games at the top of the order he is 11-for-28 with five runs scored and five extra base hits. For the season the graduate transfer is hitting .289/.353/.461 with 5 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 15 runs scored and 11 RBIs.
 
ON THE RUN
The Marauders have stolen 39 bases in 47 attempts this season. Ty Jones is 7-for-7 on steal attempts.
 
NSIC WINS
The team high for NSIC wins in a season is 14, when the Marauders finished 14-16 in 2008. UMary currently has a record of 12-10 in league play with 10 games remaining in the conference schedule.
 
NCAA WINS
The team-high for wins during the NCAA era (2007 and forward) is 18. The Marauders finished 18-24 in 2010. UMary is currently 15-14.
 
ON DECK
After the Marauders complete their Minnesota swing to close out the regular season road schedule, UMary hosts St. Cloud State in a doubleheader on Wednesday, May 5, and Northern State for three games May 7-8 to finish off the regular season.
