BISMARCK, ND – A dominant early effort and a clutch win in the last match of the day means the Barrel Trophy once again remains with the University of Mary wrestling team. In the fourth "Battle for the Barrel," the Marauders held off a late charge by Minot State University to defeat the Beavers 24-20.
The contest was decided by sophomore
Anthony Velazquez in the final match of the night at 157. Needing to take a time out for an injury early in the match, Velasquez returned to the mat to win an amazing match over Nathan Baca 9-7.
UMary, undefeated in all four meetings for the Barrel Trophy and victors over the Beavers for the second time this year, improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
"I am really proud of the guys with where they are at right now because we are winning in these gritty matches even though our training phase is down," head coach
Adam Aho said.
Starting things off for UMary was #9
Braydon Huber (165) taking on Brody Mohr. Huber dominated Mohr, getting a pinfall at the 6:14 mark and earning the Marauders six points.
