Narbuvoll, Newell named finalists for USTFCCCA national indoor track & field honors

NEW ORLEANS – Recognized for their outstanding efforts this winter, University of Mary senior Ida Narbuvoll and Marauders track & field head coach Dennis Newell are on the short list for national honors. The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced that Narbuvoll is one of three finalists for the 2020 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Women's Track Athlete of the Year while Newell is under consideration for Women's Coach of the Year.
 
After already earning conference and regional honors this season, Narbuvoll and Newell finished in the  top three vote getters in their respective category when the first round of voting by USTFCCCA member coaches was conducted last week. A final vote by member coaches beginning Monday morning and those winners will be named National Athletes & Coaches of the Year for the 2020 indoor season. Field Athletes of the Year will be announced on Wednesday, March 25. Coach of the Year is set for release on Friday, March 27.
 
A five-time All-American, Narbuvoll had a spectacular indoor season. The native of Narbuvoll, Norway, is the 2020 Northern Sun Track Athlete of the Year after winning three conference championships in the mile, the 3000 and the 5000 meter runs, setting the NSIC record in the 3k. She was the championship's High Point Performer with 30 points as the Marauders won their third straight indoor title.
 
Narbuvoll qualified to compete in four events at the NCAA indoor championships. She posted the second-best times in the nation this season in both the 3K and 5K, ranked fifth in the mile, and ran a leg on the Marauders Distance Medley Relay team that ranked tops in the country. Narbuvoll was set to compete in both the 3000 and the 5000 at the national championships before the event was cancelled.
 
Newell led the Marauders to a third straight NSIC conference championship and the program's ninth in 14 years. Ranked sixth in the country, the Marauders accumulated 163 points at the NSIC championships. UMary was led by Narbuvoll and D'Andra Morris, the NSIC Field Athlete of the Year. The Marauders were set to send eight student-athletes to compete in seven events at the NCAA championships.
