Northern Sun play opens Saturday for Marauders when rival Beavers visit the MAC

THIS WEEK
This weekend looms large for the University of Mary men's basketball team as the Marauders open Northern Sun action at home against Highway 83 in-state rival Minot State University Beavers. Tip off is approximately 5:30 pm on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the McDowell Activity Center… Also upcoming for the Marauders is their final non-conference game of the season when Mayville State University visits the MAC on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 7:30 pm.   
 
THE RECORD
After winning their last two games – both at home - the Marauders are 2-3 overall. UMary begins its Northern Sun schedule Dec. 1 when Minot State University visits the MAC.
 
WHITE OUT
Marauders fans are asked to wear white and "WHITE OUT" the McDowell Activity Center for the Marauders basketball games on Rivalry Saturday, Dec. 1, against Minot State. UMary fans are also encouraged to "WHITE OUT" the Marauders-Beavers hockey game in Mandan, ND, later that night.
 
RIVALRY DAY TRIPLEHEADER
UMary women's basketball, men's basketball and hockey all host Highway 83 instate rival Minot State University back-to-back-to-back on Saturday, December 1. The tripleheader begins with Marauders women's basketball at 3:30 pm and men's basketball at 5:30 pm against the Beavers in the McDowell Activity Center. The third and final rivalry matchup is hockey at 7 pm in Mandan, ND, at the Schwan Cadillac Arena at Starion Sports Complex.
 
BEK SPORTS BROADCASTING MARAUDERS-BEAVERS GAME SATURDAY
The University of Mary men's and women's basketball home games against Minot State University will be broadcast on BEK Sports across North Dakota on Saturday, Dec. 1. Air time is 3:15 pm from the McDowell Activity Center on the UMary campus. RADIO READJUSTMENT TO KBMR 1130 AM
Due to a scheduling conflict, the Marauders-Beavers basketball games on Saturday, Dec. 1, will be aired live on KBMR 1130 AM with Jesse Rostvedt, Voice of the Marauders, on the call. Marauders basketball will return to its regular home on Fox Sports 710 for the Mayville State contest on Tuesday, Dec. 4.
 
LAST TIME OUT
UMary convincingly defeated the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology 68-52 two days before Thanksgiving for a second straight win, both at home. Tom Kubank shot 5-of-7 behind the arc and made 9-of-12 overall from the field on the way to a career-high 25 points. Matthew Kreklow had a double double with 14 points and ten rebounds. UMary defensively held SDSMT to a 45.5 field goal percentage and just 44 shots total in the game. The Marauders, who made 46 percent of their shots overall and hit 10-of-21 trey attempts, posted a 31-22 edge in rebounds and was +4 in turnovers.
 
HOME COOKING
The Marauders opened their six game home stand at the MAC with wins over Yellowstone Christian College and South Dakota Mines. Next the Marauders host Minot State (12.1), Mayville State (12.4), St. Cloud State (12.7) and Minnesota Duluth (12.8).
 
DEEEE-FENCE
Five games into the season, the Marauders are posting impressive defensive figures. UMary leads Northern Sun teams in scoring defense (56.6 ppg), is fifth in field goal percentage defense (.401) and sixth in steals (7.6 spg).
 
DEEEE-FENCE PART 2
The Marauders stand third in NCAA Division II in points allowed (56.6 ppg). UMary is 42nd in field goal percentage defense (.401).
 
RIP TO OPPONENTS POINT TOTALS
The Marauders defense has undergone a major Reduction In Points. Last year UMary gave up 77 points per game, 20 more than what the Marauders are allowing this season through the first five games (56.6 ppg).

The most points allowed by the Marauders in any of their five games this season is 66 points. Last year UMary held opponents to 66 or fewer points four times in 27 games.
 
FAST BREAK
  • Getting everyone involved, the Marauders have had anywhere from eight to 11 players score in a game this season
  • The Marauders their first three games this season by a combined 11 points. In each of the three games UMary had possession of the ball in the final minute of the contest with a chance to at least tie the game.
  • Seven Marauders average at least 4.4 points per game
  • UMary is shooting 72.3 percent from the free throw line to their opponent's 59.4 percent. The Marauders have also attempted 19 more free throws.
 
TURNOVER TOWN
The Marauders are +4.40 in turnovers, the third-best mark in the NSIC and 32nd in NCAA Division II.
 
DOWN UNDER
Sr. F Tom Kubank is the Marauders leading scorer this season and much of his production comes from behind the arc. The Adelaide, South Australia, native averages 15 points/game and makes 3.0 treys/game, sixth in the NSIC.
 
SWAT CITY
So. F Matthew Kreklow is 8th in the NSIC in blocked shots at 1.6/game. He also averages 10 ppg and 5.4 rebounds/game to rank second on the Marauders in both categories.
 
WHITE BOARD
Jr. G Jaylan White is a sparkplug for the Marauders on both ends of the court. His assist to turnover ratio is 2.9 to rank 6th in the NSIC. At the line White is 18-of-19 for a .947 free throw percentage, third in the league. He is also 12th in assists at 4.0/game. The Marauders point guard averages 9.2 points/game.
 
OPPO RESEARCH: MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY
Minot State is coming off their best season since beginning NCAA Division II play in 2011, finishing last year 20-10 overall and 13-9 in the Northern Sun than included their first win in a conference tournament game. The Beavers graduated NSIC Player of the Year Tyler Rudolph and return just one starter from last year, David Akibo. The Beavers are 5-4 on the season but 0-2 in road games. Akibo, who has missed a pair of games, leads MSU in scoring (14.5 ppg) and rebounding (8.0 rpg) while shooting 43 percent. Kyle Beisg averages 14 ppg and has a team-high 17 treys. Cody Max chips in 12.1 ppg and Dorian Aluyi is at 10.4 ppg and 6.8 rpg.
 
HISTORY LESSON
In a series that stretches back to the 1972-73 season – just the third year of Marauders basketball – the University of Mary trails Minot State 37-34 all time… In a series of runs, the Beavers have won the last three games after the Marauders had won the previous three… The Beavers have won 12 of the last 16 get-togethers… The last season sweep was by the Marauders in 2015-16… the two teams each won at home in 2017-18 before the Beavers swept last year's two meetings... In NSIC games the Marauders are 4-8 against the Beavers.
 
THE BORTKE COURT MAC ATTACK
The Marauders opened up their home schedule with a pair of wins this season after struggling last season at the McDowell Activity Center. Despite last year's setback, UMary has found success in recent seasons at the MAC. The playing floor was christened Bortke Court in honor of long-time Mary men's basketball coach and athletic director Al Bortke in July 2009. Here is the Marauders NCAA Division II home record:
