Chance for victory narrowly escapes Marauders grasp in road loss to the Dragons

MOORHEAD, MN – A second straight nailbiter narrowly escaped the University of Mary men's basketball team's grasp as the visiting Marauders dropped a 75-69 decision to MSU Moorhead.

On Saturday, the Marauders had three shots in the paint in the closing seconds to take a lead but the ball wouldn't fall through the hoop in a 74-73 loss to Bemidji State. Tonight the Marauders closed within 70-69 on a Cayden Redfield layup with 43 seconds to play. UMary then nearly forced MSU Moorhead into a shot clock violation that instead became a long game-sealing 3-pointer for the Dragons that fell through the basket as the shot clock buzzer sounded.

Jackson Ware finished with his first double double for UMary. The junior forward paired 13 points and ten rebounds, both game-highs for the Marauders. Ware hit a pair of treys and went 5-of-6 at the line.

Redfield hit two treys and was 5-for-8 from the floor to finish with 12 points and six rebounds in 15 minutes of play. Kelton Coleman added 10 points. Andre Austin finished with seven points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

UMary (5-20 overall, 3-16 Northern Sun) hit 11 treys in the game and was 18-for-22 at the free throw line but shot just 35.6% for the game. MSUM (12-13, 9-10 NSIC) made 46.4% of its shots with eight treys.

The Marauders outrebounded the Dragons 46-30 but UMary was outscored 24-13 off turnovers and 36-20 in the paint.

In a tight first half, the Marauders closed with 31-30 at halftime when Noah Thomas nailed a trey in the final minute. Thomas delivered the Marauders first lead of the second half at 42-40 on another triple. UMary's last lead came at 44-42 on an Austin layup.

An Amare Jackson trey pulled UMary into its final tie of the night at 48-48. The Dragons then reeled off eight straight points, all by Isa El-Amin.

The Marauders used a late 8-2 run to give UMary a chance. Coleman delivered a 3-point play and Redfield followed a pair of MSUM free throws with a trey and a dunk to close within 70-69 before the clutch El-Amin trey at the shot-clock buzzer.

El-Amin hit four treys in the game and led MSUM with 18 points. Tysen Gerads added 13 points.

The Marauders next visit the University of Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, February 14. Game time is 3:30 pm.
