Box Score ABERDEEN, S.D. – A night after recording one of the program's biggest regular season wins, the University of Mary men's basketball team saw their eight game win streak snapped in a 94-70 loss at Northern State University. The Wolves shot a sizzling 62.1 percent from the floor to end a two-game losing streak to the Marauders.
The loss drops the Marauders to 13-3 overall and 8-2 in the Northern Sun. U-Mary sits third in the NSIC North Division and fourth in the league overall. The Marauders defeated 3
rd ranked MSU Moorhead 77-73 on Friday. The Wolves improve to 8-7 and 4-5.
A fast start by the Wolves combined with a slow start by the Marauders allowed Northern State to jump out to a quick 8-0 lead. U-Mary missed its first three shots of the game and turned the ball over twice in its first five possessions.
Five straight points from
Bryan Jefferson keyed an 8-2 run to pull U-Mary within 31-27 with just over four minutes left in the opening half. The Wolves responded by scoring 15 of the next 17 points and entered intermission leading 46-29. Northern State maintained a double digit lead the rest of the night.
Down by as many as 18 points, the Marauders twice cut the deficit to 11 twice, the last time at 62-51 with 11:26 remaining in the game. Both times NSU responded on its next possession with a basket and never allowed U-Mary to get on a run.
With the Marauders playing without key reserves
Michael Gorder and
Brenden Mann due to injury, the Wolves held a 32-13 advantage in points off the bench. Northern State also held a 20-8 edge in points off turnovers.
U-Mary shot a respectable 46.4 percent from the field but Northern State made 62.1 percent of its shots, including a 13-of-22 effort behind the arc. The Marauders made just 4-of-15 3-point attempts.
Brandon Tyler led the Marauders with 17 points. The senior guard was 3-of-4 on trey attempts and 7-of-13 overall. Jefferson added 13 points and
Devan Douglas scored ten.
Rickey Suggs chipped in eight points, seven rebounds and three steals off the bench.
Darin Paterka scored a game-high 21 points for the Wolves, making 7-of-9 shots, and made three steals. Skye Warwick hit five treys and scored 17 points.
The Marauders return home to host Winona State University on Friday, January 15.
