NSIC CHAMPIONSHIP PAGEWINONA, Minn. – The University of Mary competes at the Northern Sun men's and women's outdoor track & field championships this weekend with the two squads both holding high hopes but at different elevations.

The U-Mary women's team is the two-time defending NSIC outdoor champion and has won five titles in seven seasons since joining the league. After getting bumped out of first place by the University of Minnesota Duluth at the indoor championships by just four points and losing out on the opportunity to four-peat during the winter season, the Marauders have extra incentive to post a strong finish for the spring.

On the men's side, the Marauders finished fifth at the conference outdoor championships last year, jumping two places from 2012. U-Mary also improved its standing during the indoor season, improving one slot to sixth in 2014. The Marauders chances to continue making gains was dealt a blow when senior
Aaron Teigen was injured will not compete at Winona. He was the indoor long jump champion and placed fourth in the triple jump.

Five-time All-American
Kathryn Stewart headlines the Marauders women's squad this weekend, holding the top times by any conference runner this season in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. An NSIC athlete of the week this spring, Stewart is the defending conference champion in both the 100 and the 200.

Cassandra Jones, a freshman, owns the top NSIC time in the 400 meter run and is second to Stewart in the 200. Jones posted NCAA provisional qualifying times in both events.

Janet Johnson recorded the conference record in the 110 meters hurdles last season and won the conference title as a freshman and as junior. Ranked first in the event this season, she is also fourth in the long jump.

Other top seeds for the Marauders include
Brienna Lynch in the 800 meter run,
Crystal Hovland in the 400 meter hurdles, and the 4x100 and the 4x400 meter relay teams.

Jordan Washington is the lone U-Mary men's team member to hold a top seed in an event. The senior from Kady, Texas, owns the top time in the 400 meter run n the NSIC this spring.

Chris Jessop is highly seeded in two events for U-Mary. The long distance runner currently ranks fourth in the 5,000 meter run and sixth in the 1,500 meter run.

Sophomore
Joe Berger is ranked third among high jumpers. In the javelin,
Nick Roehrich is fourth and Ben Gajfus sixth.

The 2014 NSIC Men's and Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place Friday and Saturday, May 9-10, at the Winona Community Track & Recreation Complex at Paul Giel Field in Winona, Minn. Â Both track and field events will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, while Saturday will have field events beginning at 11 a.m. and the track finals at 1 p.m.Â
