Paint Domination Leads Marauders to First Road Win

Box Score CROOKSTON, Minn. – A dominant effort in the paint by Marc Musungayi and Jalen Jaspers led the University of Mary to at 67-62 victory at the University of Minnesota Crookston. In the first road win of the season for the Marauders, seniors Musungayi and Jaspers combined to score 42 points. 
 
Primarily on the backs of Musungayi and Jaspers, the Marauders held a 46-20 advantage on points in the paint. Musungayi led all players with 22 points. He hit half of his 18 shots from the field, snared eight rebounds and made two steals. The Hamilton, Ontario, native also was 4-of-5 at the free throw line. Jaspers scored 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting. All nine of his field goals came inside the paint. He also contributed a team-high three steals.
 
U-Mary played virtually the whole game with the lead, only trailing when UMC scored the opening basket of the game. A 10-0 run – keyed by six straight points from Musungayi - provided the Marauders a 29-17 lead in the first half before the Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 29-26 at break.
 
UMC (4-17 overall / 1-16 Northern Sun) closed to within one point early in the second half but U-Mary (6-16 / 4-13) would slowly grow its lead to 10 points.
 
The Marauders dominated the boards, holding a 41-25 edge in rebounding. Despite an 18-4 advantage in offensive rebounds the Marauders only had an 11-4 edge in second chance points.
 
Germain Decoste led U-Mary's rebounding efforts. The junior forward hauled down a career-high 14 rebounds. He also had eight points in the game.
 
Tyler West led UMC with 18 points, making 8-of-12 shots from the floor. He also had eight rebounds, two steals and five turnovers. Giorgi Koguashvili added 15 points and Derrick Redd posted 12 points and five assists.
 
The Marauders shot 45.9 per cent from the field (28-of-61), including a 3-of-15 effort behind the arc. U-Mary also was just 8-of-15 at the free throw line. The Golden Eagles made 48.9 per cent of their field goal attempts (22-of-45). Despite 16 fewer field goal attempts UMC stayed in the game by making 7-of-18 three point attempts and finishing 11-of-15 at the free throw line.
 
The Marauders conclude the weekend at NSIC North Division – leading Bemidji State University on Saturday, February 8, at 6 PM.
