Victory Eludes Marauders Grasp in Overtime Loss to Vikings

Box Score Bismarck, ND – With a win virtually in their grasp, victory slid past the University of Mary men's basketball team at the last second like a car attempting to stop too late at an icy intersection. Augustana tied the game at the free throw line with 1.1 seconds left in regulation before the Vikings slipped past the homestanding Marauders 75-68 in overtime.

Leading since the 11 minute mark of the first half, the Marauders (2-10 overall, 0-7 Northern Sun) saw their one-time 14 point advantage completely vanish when Daniel Jansen tied the game at 64-64 to force overtime. Fouled in the act of shooting behind the three point arc, Jansen hit 2-of-3 free throws to force overtime.  Jansen, who scored a game-high 31 points, opened the extra session by draining a three-pointer to give the Vikings (8-5, 5-2) a lead they never relinquished. A three-point play by Yuriy Malashenko with 1:08 remaining sealed the Vikings win, pushing the Augie advantage to 73-67.

Searching for their first conference win of the season and hoping to snap a nine-game losing streak, the Marauders shook up their lineup and controlled the action most of the game. Damonta Henry, who scored a career-high 25 points, knocked down a trey at 11:18 of the first half to provide the Marauders a 16-13 lead and start a 12-4 run. Up by as many as nine, the Marauders entered intermission ahead 35-27 on a jumper by Marc Musungayi at the buzzer.

Luke Scott, making his first collegiate start, drained a long jumper in the right corner to open the second half and give U-Mary its first double digit lead of the day. After the lead diminished to six, Scott and Henry nailed treys on back-to-back possessions to grow the Marauders advantage to 11.

Henry soon pushed U-Mary's lead to a game-high 14 points after personally scoring eight straight points. After nailing successive triples, Henry made a layup for a 55-41 Marauders advantage with 9:11 remaining in the game.

The Vikings then launched a 16-5 run to close within three points. After another three-ball by Henry pushed the U-Mary advantage to 63-57 at 1:53, Jensen halved the difference with his own trey at 1:37. Casey Schilling made two free throws with 30 second remaining to pull Augie within a point. Scott, after making 1-of-2 free throws to give U-Mary a 64-62 lead, was called for the foul on Jansen that allowed the Augie sophomore forward to tie the game.

A native of Chicago, IL, Henry drilled 5-of-7 shots behind the arc and was 9-of-14 from the field overall on his way for 25 points. He also hit both free throws and added three assists. Also coming off the bench, Musungayi chipped in 12 points before fouling out. He was 6-of-9 from the floor, added nine rebounds and had three blocks. Jalen Jaspers and Chris Mason also had eight points each. Scott scored nine points. Additionally, fellow frosh Isaac Lindquist added five rebounds in his first start.

Jansen, who led all players with 31, also had 11 rebounds and three blocks. Schilling scored 16 points, made four assists and posted nine rebounds.

U-Mary shot 45 per cent for the game, a solid effort dragged down by a 1-for-8 effort in overtime. Bolstered by a 12-of-20 efficiency in the second half, Augie shot 47.3 per cent overall for the game.

The Marauders held a 40-38 advantage in rebounds but committed 17 turnovers to nine for Augie, giving the Vikings a 19-11 edge in points of turnovers.

In the middle of a winter storm warning, the Marauders are set to host Wayne State College on Saturday, January 4, at 6 PM.
