Box Score BISMARCK, N.D. – With his team desperate for a win,
Marc Musungayi exploded for a career-high 33 points to carry the University of Mary to an 88-83 double overtime victory over visiting St. Cloud State University. Musungayi made all 15 of his free throw attempts on the night, including 11 straight in the two overtimes as the Marauders picked up their first Northern Sun win of the season.
The victory snapped a 13-game losing streak overall for the Marauders and a 13-game conference losing skid.
Coming off several close losses recently, the Marauders (3-13 overall, 1-10 NSIC) managed to overcame a six-point deficit with 34 seconds left in regulation against the Northern Sun North Division-leading Huskies (11-4, 7-4).
Fouled after hauling down an offensive rebound,
Jalen Jaspers made two free throws with 28 seconds remaining in regulation, pulling U-Mary within 64-60. Following two misses at the free throw line by SCSU, Musungayi scored in the lane off a feed from
Damonta Henry with 17 seconds on the clock to close the gap to two points.
Two more missed free throws by SCSU provided U-Mary a chance to pull even and the Marauders took advantage. Henry drove the lane and hit a layup with 1.1 seconds showing to knot the contest at 64-64 and send the game to overtime.
The Marauders scored the first seven points of the first extra session as Musungayi converted four free throw attempts and
Chris Mason nailed a three-pointer.
Turnovers on three of the next four U-Mary possessions allowed SCSU back into the contest and a three-point play by Matt Craggs pushed the Huskies ahead 72-71 with 23 seconds left. Musingayi responded by making two free throws with 11 seconds remaining before Kevin Levondoski forced a second extra session by making one of two free throws for SCSU with six seconds left.
After the Huskies scored the first three points of overtime, Musungayi tied the contest at 76-76 on a three-point play to start an eight-point run by the Marauders. Musungayi added two more free throws and Henry sank 3-of-4 at the line.
Behind a trey and a layup by Levandoski, the Huskies pulled within 82-81 before
Mike Johnson knocked down two free throws with 24 seconds left. Levondowski would match with a pair of gift tosses at the 11 second mark to close the gap to 84-83.
Despite struggling with free throws all season, the Marauders finished off the Huskies at the line. Musungayi made two more with nine seconds before Johnson iced the game with another pair and one second left.
The Marauders finished the night 29-of-33 at the free throw line. The Huskies were 24-of-37.
Traditionally a difficult place for the Huskies to play, SCSU has lost five of six games at the McDowell Activity Center.
The 33 points scored by Musungayi is the sixth-most by a U-Mary player since the Marauders began NCAA play in the 2006-07 season. It was the most by a U-Mary player in a single game since All-American Anthony Moody scored 42 against St. Cloud State on Feb. 19, 2011. Musungayi's previous high was 27 points at Northern State University on Feb. 23, 2013.
The 15 made free throws is the most by a U-Mary player during the Marauders NCAA era. The previous high was 12 by Moody at Concordia University-St. Paul on Feb. 18, 2011.
Musungayi, who was 9-of-16 from the field, also had nine rebounds and three steals in the game, both team highs.
Three other Marauders also hit double digits.
Germain Decoste posted 12 points and four rebounds.
Chris Mason came off the bench to nail four treys in seven attempts, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Also in a reserve role, Henry posted 10 points.
Jaspers chipped in nine points, had six rebounds, six assists and two steals. Johnson finished with seven points.
Levondoski paced the Huskies with 20 points and four assists. Jordan Poydras added 15 and Damarius Cruz and Scott Stone chipped in 13 apiece.
The Marauders continue their four game home stand against the University of Minnesota Duluth on Jan. 18 at 6 PM.
