Second Half Slowdown Costs Marauders in Road Loss to NSIC-Leading Warriors

Box Score WINONA, Minn. – In a matchup between two teams on opposite ends of the Northern Sun standings, the University of Mary pushed its upset bid against conference-leading Winona State University into the second half. After leading much of the opening session, the Marauders eventually succumbed to the 21st-ranked and homestanding Warriors 74-60.

In a game that virtually mirrored the Warriors Northern Sun opening round tournament win over the Marauders last spring, U-Mary (2-12 overall, 0-9 NSIC) once again jumped out to take a first half lead before Winona State (14-2, 9-0) took control after intermission.

Behind an 8-0 run late in the first half, the Marauders built a 28-21 lead as Brandon Tyler and Damonta Henry sandwiched three-pointers around a Jalen Jaspers jumper. The U-Mary lead would be wiped out before intermission by a 9-0 Warriors run. Capped by a Taylor Cameron basket with 36 seconds left, WSU led 30-28 at the break.

A Devan Douglas dunk provided the Marauders one final lead at 33-31 early in the second half but the U-Mary advantage provided short-lived. Two Skyler O'Laughlin free throws evened the game for WSU and a Kellen Taylor layup pushed the Warriors ahead for good. Winona State soon took control with an 11-0 run highlighted by seven points from Cameron.

Douglas led the Marauders with 11 points, making 4-of-6 shots from the floor. He also had four rebounds. Marc Musungayi and Jaspers both chipped in 10 points. Tyler had five points, three assists and three steals.

Taylor led all players with 20 points and nine rebounds. Cameron and Riley Bambenek both had 15 points.

The Marauders finish the weekend at Upper Iowa University on Saturday, January 11.
