Nanooks Blow Past Marauders in Opening Round of Alaska Invitational

Box Score Fairbanks, AK – Unable to contain the inside-outside game of GCI Alaska Invitational host Alaska Nanooks, the University of Mary men's basketball team tumbled 84-57 in the Marauders first road game of the season.
 
The homestanding Nanooks (2-1 overall) rained down 11 three-pointers on the Marauders (2-1) and held a 30-18 edge in paint points. Alaska shot 48.8 per cent, including an 11-for-23 effort behind the arc. U-Mary hit 37.9 per cent of its shots, making just 4-of-19 three-point attempts.
 
The Marauders started fast, scoring the first five points of the game on a Marc Musungayi layup and a three-pointer by Brandon Tyler.
 
Joe Slocum then took over the game for the Nanooks, scoring 14 points during a 19-4 run for Alaska. Slocum finished the day with 18 points, including a 3-for-4 effort on three-pointers, and six steals.
 
Soon down by 12 points, a Jalen Jaspers free throw closed the gap to six points at 30-24, the closest U-Mary would get the rest of the night.
 
Up 36-26 at intermission, the Nanooks sealed the game with a 15-2 run midway through the second half to push their advantage to 56-34 with 10:31 remaining in the game. Alaska eventually led by as many as 30 points.
 
Musungayi led the Marauders with 16 points, hitting 8-of-12 shots from the floor. The senior forward also had five rebounds.
 
Freshman guard Damonta Henry chipped in 13 points off the bench, making all four free throw attempts. Gemain Decoste and Marquealis Edwards both had six rebounds.
 
All five Nanook starters scored in double figures, led by Slocum with 18. Ronnie Baker had 13 points and six assists and Andrew Kelly posted 12 points and eight rebounds.
 
The Marauders next play Fresno Pacific University on day 2 of the Alaska Invitational at 8 PM central on Friday, November 22.
