Chavez competed in the Dragon Twilight 6k at MSU-Moorhead, where he finished with a time of 20:35.

An all-state track performer at Bowman High School, David Chavez also earned all-region recognition in both cross country and track for the Bulldogs. Chavez is a team captain in both cross country and track. He led his cross country team to 4th place at the North Dakota Class B meet as a junior in 2013 before improving to third in 2014. He helped his 4x800 meter relay team place fourth at the state track meet in 2014 before improving to third in 2015. Chavez has posted times of 2:04 in the 800 meter run, 54.1 seconds in the 400m, 4:55 in the 1,600m, and10:40 in the 3,200m.

Chavez made both the indoor and outdoor NSIC All-Academic Team, while improving his 800m time to a 2:01.
