INDIANAPOLIS, IN – UMary women's track and field had a noteworthy day at the NCAA Championships, with an All-American secured and a school record falling.
Elizabeth Acheson competed in the toughest of three heats in the 800m prelims. Her time of 2:07.20 would have been an automatic qualifier in the other two heats, but Acheson placed third in hers. With her time being the fourth best of the prelims, her spot in the finals, while not automatic, was safe.
Acheson will race in the 800m finals at 3:00 tomorrow. Last year, the senior was the runner-up nationally in the event.
Laila Cleare was unable to qualify for the finals of the 200m, but her time of 24.09 was enough to break the school record. The record was set earlier this year by
Sakena Massiah. Cleare finished 15
th in the field. The junior is now the record-holder of both the 60m and 200m.
Tia Horning placed 17
th in the 60m hurdles with an 8.66. Both she and Cleare finished above their seeding.
UMary will have two athletes active on the final day of competition. Acheson's aforementioned 800m finals will take place at 3:00. Then rounding out the weekend will be
Alyssa Becker in the 3000m after her 2
nd-team All-American performance in the 5000m. Becker's race begins at 3:40.
