BURNSVILE, MN – A dazzling debut for the University of Mary's Justus Breston earned the defensive back Northern Sun Defensive Player of the Week honors for his efforts in the opening game of the season.
The native of Atlanta, GA, returned a pair of interceptions for touchdowns in the Marauders 23-6 Week 0 win over visiting University of Jamestown. Breston returned his first interception 25 yards for the score on the final play of the first quarter to boost the UMary lead to 9-0. He ended the Jimmies next offensive possession with a 47 yard interception return to the end one midway through the second quarter to send UMary into intermission leading 16-0.
Berston finished the game with two interceptions for 72 yards and two scores. He also broke up another pass and made a solo tackle.
This was the first time in the Marauders NCAA era that a UMary defensive player scored two defensive touchdowns in the same game.
Breston, a transfer from Chabot College, is the first UMary player to earn NSIC weekly accolades since Danny Kittner earned offensive honors on October 24, 2022. The last UMary player to earn defensive honors was Paul Guptill in the final game of the 2019 season.
The Marauders next host Augustana on Thursday, September 5, in the 2024 northern Sun opener. Kickoff is slated for 6 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
