BISMARCK, ND – University of Mary head football coach
Shann Schillinger and his staff looked both near and far for a 2026 recruiting class that features a heavy mix of local scholar-athletes, veteran transfers from NCAA Division I to junior colleges, and a quartet of European players who developed in the NFL Academy.
"We're really excited about this recruiting class," said Schillinger. "Our staff did a great job building relationships and this class is full of multi-sport athletes who were all highly recommended by their high school coaches. The class has good length across the board and we got bigger as a football team at several key positions, which was a big emphasis for us in this cycle. We also put a heavy emphasis on the kids in our own backyard.
"More than anything, we like the potential of this group. If these guys do the things that it takes - commit to the weight room, learn our system, and compete every day—they all have a chance to be good players for us."
Today's 2026 recruiting class signing announcement features 29 commitments, including 20 freshmen and nine transfers.
The incoming freshmen class features 13 North Dakota natives, including 11 who played for one of the five Bismarck high schools.
The freshman class also features numerous ties to the program. Two have brothers on the football team. Three signees have fathers who played football for the Marauders. Most have been coached by former UMary players.
Eleven of the 29 recruits are midyear commitments who are already attending UMary. Nine signees are transfers with four having played at NCAA Division I schools. Three midyear newcomers competed in the NFL Academy in Europe, two of which are freshmen.
One transfer is a familiar name to UMary fans. Justus Breston played for the Marauders in 2024 and was the Northern Sun and D2Football Player of the Week after returning two interceptions for touchdowns in the season opener. The cornerback spent last season at the University of Montana and helped the Griz reach the FCS semifinals.
"Recruiting is a year-round process," said Schillinger, a former NFL player with the Atlanta Falcons and Tennessee Titans who enters his fourth season as the UMary head coach. "Spring ball is going to be very important for our program and for a lot of our players as we evaluate where we're at. It gives us a chance to see who's ready to play next year, who's taken the next step in their development, and where we still maybe need to add a few more pieces to our roster. Those spring evaluations are critical as we continue to build our team for the 2026 season."
The Marauders 2026 signing class includes eight offensive linemen, six wide receivers, four defensive linemen, four defensive backs, three tight ends, two linebackers, one quarterback and one running back.

Transfer from Jacksonville State University… saw action in one game for the Tigers in 2025 against Grambling… redshirted at JSU in 2024… played the 2023 season at Coffeyville Community College… son of Sergio Zandamela.
UMary Head Coach Shann Schillinger comments on Bruno Miguel Rego Zandamela: "We're really excited about adding Bruno to our offensive line room. He brings some experience as he's been around the collegiate game for a few years. He's an impressive looking guy. For his size he is very light on his feet. We need a big spring and off-season from Bruno."
