Box Score MANDAN, ND – The University of Mary tennis team clinched the second seed in the Northern Sun tournament with a tremendous effort in the final match of the regular season. In a meeting originally scheduled for March 24 in Moorhead, MN, but delayed due to weather, the Marauders took advantage of an extra home match and rolled over St. Clous State University 6-1.
The Marauders finish the regular season 7-2 in NSIC play and 8-6 overall. UMary and Minnesota State University tied for second place but the Marauders claimed the tiebreaker due to a 4-3 win over the Mavericks earlier this season. The NSIC tournament is set for April 26-28 in Sioux Falls, SD. Tournament times and official brackets will be released shortly.
UMary got off to a fast start, sweeping all three of the doubles matches to earn one team point. Leading the charge was
Chloe Chong and Ilona Fretag as the duo claimed the #1 doubles meeting 6-1.
Chong, the reigning NSIC Player of the Week, opened singles play with a win after her opponent retired. Chong was leading 5-0 when the match ended.
Hala Hassam Awad was dominant in the #2 singles match as she steamrolled Maria Paz Aoki 6-1, 6-0.
Emily Needham, the Marauders lone senior, also claimed a comfortable 6-3, 6-1 win over Maria Molitor at #5 singles.
A pair of Marauders overcame opening set setbacks to rally and claim their matches. Freitag dropped set one before rallying for a 7-5 win in the second set before a tiebreaker win over Orianna Grott in #3 singles 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (6).
Maria Estinvil claimed a win in #4 singles in similar fashion. After a loss in the first set Estinvil rallied past Brooklyn Broadwell 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (5).
