BISMARCK, ND – A tremendous all-around effort by
Malakhi Stevenson and a pair of top two finishes by
Jorgen Paulson headlined the University of Mary's men's outdoor track & field efforts at the team's lone home outdoor performance in the Al Bortke Open.
Held at the MDU Resources Community Bowl, Stevenson tallied 5,831 points in the decathlon at the Al Bortke Open. His point total is a career-high and ranks him 45
th in the nation. Among the multi athletes, Stevenson posted the top marks in 110 meter hurdles, the pole vault and the javelin throw on his way to the decathlon title.
Paulson won the long jump with a top effort of 6.77 meters. He placed second in the 200 meter dash when he finished in a career-best time of 21.70 seconds.
Akil Howell won the 400 meter dash in a clocking of 49.37 seconds.
Dawson Strom led the field in the 1500 meter run with a time of 3:58.46. He also added a 5
th place finish in the 800 meter run (1:57.90)
Guillermo Fregoso claimed a pair of runner-up finishes. He took second in both the 800 (1:57.39) and the 1500 (4:0.35). His mark in the 800 was a career-best.
Nathan Bender earned 2
nd place in the 100 meter dash in a career-best time of 11.04 seconds.
Additional top-5 finishes for UMary:
- Tanner Schiller was 3rd in the 800 (1:57.53)
- Schiller combined with Joseph Eberle, Logan Barnes and Joseph Patchen-Mills to place 4th in the 4x400 meter relay (3:28.31)
- Barnes was 2nd in the high jump (1.80 meters)
- Eberle was 5th in the 200 with a career-best time of 51.03 seconds
- Will Acheson claimed 4th in the high jump (1.70 meters)
- Logan Wentz was 2nd in the triple jump (12.62 meters) and 5th in the long jump (6.45 meters)
- Cameron Brusven (53.13 meters) and Vaughn Deinhart (51.97 meters) went 2-3 in the javelin. Deinhart set a career-best mark for the 4th straight meet.
- Kaden Selle was 5th in the decathlon with 4,874 points
The Marauders finished second in the team standings with 140 points, just behind MSU Moorhead with 156 points in the 10-team meet.
UMary next competes at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, IA, starting Thursday, April 27, the Al Cassell Classic in Jamestown, ND, on Friday, April 28, and the Ron Masanz Classic in Moorhead, MN, on April 29.
