Marauders to make NSIC baseball tournament debut Thursday at SCSU in best-of-3 opening series

THIS WEEK
The University of Mary makes its 1st-ever appearance in the Northern Sun baseball tournament this week when the Marauders face St. Cloud State University in an opening-round best-of-3 series on Thursday and Friday, May 13-14. The opener on Thursday is set for 6 pm at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, MN. First pitch for game 2 on Friday is 11 am, also at Joe Faber Field. Should a third game be needed, the start time is 5 pm at the Cold Spring Ballpark in Cold Spring, MN.
 
NSIC FINAL FOUR
The four winners of the opening series will advance to the Northern Sun tournament double elimination round set for May 19-21 at Karras Park in Sioux Falls, SD. The NSIC tournament champion earns a berth in the NCAA regional tournament.

RECORDS
The Marauders are 21-18 overall and 18-14 in Northern Sun play. UMary finished 6th overall in the NSIC standings… SCSU finished the regular season 20-12 overall and finished 3rd in the NSIC with a record of 18-9.  
 
LAST WEEK
The Marauders finished the last week of the regular season 4-1. After splitting a doubleheader at home against St. Cloud State – dropping the opener 7-4 before rebounding to win 6-3 on a 3-run walk-off home run by Spencer Gillund in the 10th inning – UMary swept Northern State. The Marauders swept the doubleheader 6-1 and 4-3 before finishing the season with a 6-3 win on a walk-off home run by Quentin Evers… The SCSU doubleheader at UMary proved to be the Huskies final games of the season as their series with Southwest Minnesota State was cancelled due to SMSU COVID-19 protocols.
 
A LOOK AT SCSU
The Huskies closed out the regular season in impressive fashion, winning 10-of-12 games to finish 3rd in the NSIC. SCSU has finished in the Top 3 of the NSIC every season since 2010 and hasn't missed an NSIC tournament in in 11 seasons. The NCAA regional rankings released May 6 included the Huskies as one of eight schools in consideration for six slots in the regional tournament. SCSU has qualified for the NCAA regional the last five seasons and nine out of ten. CF John Nett leads a dynamic Huskies offense (.394/.541/.615 43R, 8 2B, 27 RBI) that also includes 1B Jake Shustrich (.385/.504/.648, 12 2B, 29 RBIs) and RF Matt Quade (.366/.429/.598 5 HR, 34 RBIs). As a team the Huskies have a slash line of .321/.418/.508. Jake Habeck leads the pitching staff with a record of 6-1, an ERA of 2.48 and a WHIP of 0.96, striking out 30 in 36.1 innings. Trever Koenig is 3-3 with a 2.60 ERA and 0.96 WHIP with 11 walks and 45 strikeouts in 45 innings. Matt Osterberg is 3-2 with a 2.97 ERA and 1.07 WHIP with 52Ks in 39.1 innings.  
 
BY THE NUMBERS
21 | The Marauders set an NCAA-era record (2007 and on) for wins in a season. The old mark was 18 in 2010. This is the most wins overall for the Marauders since posting 30 wins in 2002.
 
18 | The 18 wins in NSIC play is a new team record, eclipsing the previous total of 14 in 2008.
 
.563 | The Marauders NSIC winning percentage of .563 (18-14) is a program-best, ahead of the program mark of .550 (11-9) in 2007. The 2007 season – UMary's 1st year in the Northern Sun – is the only other season the Marauders have had a winning record in the NSIC.
 
2002 | The Marauders are guaranteed a winning record in 2021. The last time the Marauders posted a winning record was in 2000 when the team finished 30-15 and won the DAC-10 tournament and advanced to the NAIA regional tournament.
 
6 | Jonathon Draheim has set a Marauders UMary NCAA-era single season record for wins with six. The previous record was five by Matt Medeiros (2010) and Jeff Skadeland (2013)… The school record for single season wins is 10 by Marauders Hall of Famer Ryan Astle in 2002.
 
4 |Paxton Miller has set a Marauders NCAA-era (2007 and on) record for saves in a season with four. The previous high was three by Chris Scott and Charles Bielejeski in 2019 and Travis Famias in 2012. The school record is eight by Chad Kruckenberg (1998) and Travis Dressler (2004).
 
.968 | The Marauders are on target to set a new school record for fielding percentage. UMary's currently fielding at a clip of .968, which is well ahead of the program mark of .962 set in 2013. UMary ranks 4th in the NSIC and 44th nationally in fielding percentage.
 
6 | 12 | 2 | 5 | Calvin James had a monster game at Southwest Minnesota State University in the Marauders 18-14 win, setting UMary NCAA-era single game records for total bases (12) and RBIs (6) while tying marks for home runs (2) and hits (5). He finished the game 5-for-7 with a double, two home runs, three runs scored and six RBIs.
 
POWER BALL
48 | The Marauders tied the school record for home runs in a season with 48, matching the total from 2000
 
2 | Three different Marauders have hit two home runs in a game this season, tying the UMary NCAA-era single game record. Calvin James has hit two homers three times this season, Ty Jones has hit two in a game twice, and Quentin Evers once. This has happened just 15 times since 2007. James accounts for four of the occurrences.
 
10 | With three home runs this week, Derek Shoen has moved atop the 2021 Marauders long ball leaderboard with 10. Shoen is two from tying the school-record of 12 and one behind the NCAA-era record of a 11. Ty Jones and Cal James are right behind with nine… Steve Laasko owns the school record with 12 in 1998. Right behind is Tyler Liffrig with 11 (2008 and 2009). Liffrig owns the NCAA-era record for home runs in a single season. Darius Barlas (2019) and Michael Feldman (2008) both hit ten home runs. Andy Leer and Liffrig both hit nine in 2009, now equaled by James and Jones.   
 
4 | Twice this season the Marauders have hit four home runs in a game – in a 5-3 win at Concordia-St. Paul on March 25 and at Southwest Minnesota State in an 18-14 win on May 1… Since beginning NCAA play in 2007, those totals were only bested by the six UMary hit at Upper Iowa on April 28, 2007.

WALKOFF WONDERS
Three ties this season the Marauders have blasted a walk-off home run, including twice in the final four games of the season.
  • Derek Shoen led off the 7th inning with a blast deep to center field in a 5-4 win over Augustana
  • Spencer Gillund hit a laser inside the left field foul pole with two outs and two on in the 10th inning of a 6-3 UMary win over SCSU, the first time in 23 games the Marauders had beaten the Huskies
  • Quentin Evers crushed a long 3-run home run over the left field wall with two outs in the 9th inning to deliver a 6-3 win for the Marauders over the Wolves in the season finale

Marauders pitchers have thrown a no-hitter, a 1-hitter, a 2-hitter and a 3-hittter this season. Jonathan Draheim hurled a no-hitter in a 4-0 win over Upper Iowa… Austin Wagner, Mitch Oehme and Anthony Leedle held the Bulldogs to a single hit in UMary's 10-0 win over Minnesota Duluth... Wagner and Oehme then combined on a 2-hit 7-0 shutout of Southwest Minnesota State… in his last outing, Wagner allowed three hits in a 7-inning complete game 6-1 win over Northern State, striking out 11 in the effort.
 
 
DRAHEIM BY THE NUMBERS
Jonathan Draheim is 6-1 with a 3.78 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in 50 innings. In eight starts he has allowed just 49 hits and 6 walks while striking out 38 hitters… He has four complete games and has gone fewer than six innings just twice… In NCAA D2 he ranks 13th in complete games (4),20th in walks/9 innings (1.08), 51st in wins (6), 74th in WHIP (1.10) and 34th in strikeouts-to-walks ratio (6.33)… Draheim's no-hit effort against Upper Iowa (4-0 win, 7 IP, 5Ks, 2 HBP, 0 BB, pitched six straight perfect innings to close game) was the fourth in school history (Roger Wuertz vs. Graceland College in 1998, Michael Allen vs. Minnesota-Crookston in 2007 and Shane Trattles vs. Penn State-Beaver in 2014)… he retired the first 16 batters he faced in his season-opener at Southwest Baptist and retired 19 straight hitters in his no-hitter against Upper Iowa in his no-hitter.

Lefthander Austin Wagner, a transfer from NCAA Division I Abilene Christian, has had five dominant outings in his seven starts this season for the Marauders. For the season Wagner has a 2.10 ERA and a 0.73 WHIP covering34.1 innings. He has 41 Ks and has allowed just 18 hits and seven walks… Wagner had a string of 18 scoreless innings snapped when he allowed a solo home run in the final inning of a 6-1 win over Northern State University. He held the Wolves to three hits and no walks while striking out 11 in his first complete game for UMary... In his last 19 innings, Wagner has held opponents to one run on six hits and one walk while striking out 26.  
 
BOX SCORE GEMS
•             Andrew Brooks has allowed just 5 runs (4 earned) this season in 17 relief appearances spanning 22 innings of relief. Brooks has given up just nine hits and has struck out 34 with a 1.64 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP... He has a record of 3-1… in his last five outings Brooks has given up one unearned run on two hits and four walks in nine innings while striking out 14.  
•             Third baseman Calvin James is hitting .359 with a .446 on base percentage and is slugging .665 with a 1.101 OPS to lead the Marauders in all four categories. He has 13 doubles, 1 triple, 32 runs scored, 9 home runs and 33 RBIs. He is in the Top 10 of the NSIC in hitting, slugging, RBIs, doubles and home runs… James has an impressive ability to control the strike zone. He has struck out just 12 times and has drawn 21 walks.
•             First baseman Derek Shoen owns a slash line of .331/.403/.654 and an OPS of 1.057. He has 10 doubles, 2 triples, 10 home runs and 30 RBIs in 37 games. Shoen also has started seven games on the hill for UMary and has a 5.91 ERA covering 35 innings with 31 strikeouts.
•             Ty Jones has accumulated 5 doubles, 2 triples, 9 home runs, 26 RBIs and 21 runs on the season, posting a slash line of .287/.381/.600 for a .981 OPS. The center fielder is also a regular in the Marauders rotation. Jones has struck out 34 hitters in 29 innings on the hill, allowing just 30 hits and posting a 4.03 ERA.
•             C Tyrus Barclay moved into the leadoff slot in the Augie series and he has been on fire since the move. In 16 games at the top of the order he is hitting .381 (24-for-63) with 9 runs scored and nine extra base hits. For the season the graduate transfer is hitting .313/.366/.482 with 8 doubles, 1 triple, 3 home runs, 19 runs scored and 16 RBIs.
  • Quentin Evers is showing impressive power for the Marauders. The right fielder has six home runs in 42 at bats. He is hitting .357/.472/.810 for an OPS of 1.282. He has scored 14 runs and driven in 14.
 
ON THE RUN
The Marauders have stolen 52 bases in 62 attempts this season, a success rate of 84%. Ty Jones is 10-for-11 on steal attempts to lead the team… James Martin leads the team with 9 steals… Marauders opponents are just 63-for-84 on steal attempts (75%)
 
CONGRATULATIONS JAY FLAA
University of Mary baseball alum Jay Flaa made his debut with the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday, April 27, to become the first former Marauders scholar-athlete to play a game in Major League Baseball.
Additionally Flaa becomes the first former University of Mary scholar-athlete to play in a regular season game in any of the major professional sports leagues in North America (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, MLS). A righthanded relief pitcher for the Orioles, the Mandan, ND, native pitched for UMary as a freshman in 2011. He started ten games for the Marauders, completed one, earned a victory and struck out 39 hitters in 49.1 innings. Flaa transferred to NCAA Division I North Dakota State University and was drafted by the Orioles in the in the 6th round of the 2015 draft… Flaa pitched 1.1 innings of scoreless relief in a 5-1 loss for Baltimore against the visiting New York Yankees. He induced former National League Most Valuable player Giancarlo Stanton to ground into a double play and struck out former American League home run champion Aaron Judge for the final out.
