BISMARCK, ND – The University of Mary tennis team competes in their final two matches the 2021 regular season when they travel to Owatonna, MN, on Saturday, April 10, for a 4 pm match against Southwest Minnesota State University. On Sunday, March 28, UMary faces Minnesota State University – Mankato at 8 am.
Southwest Minnesota State is 6-1 in the NSIC and is second in the standings. Minnesota State University - Mankato sits in 11th with a 1-8 conference record. UMary currently stands in fifth place in the NSIC at 6-3.
Tasha Dembo is second in the NSIC in number one singles with a 7-2 record. Kelsey Lajom ranks fourth in number four singles with a 4-4 record. Heidi Jacobson places second in number six singles with a 3-4 record.
LAST TIME OUT
The Marauders split their last two games as UMary was defeated by Augustana University 7-0 before winning 4-3 against the University of Sioux Falls. The Marauders won two out of their three doubles matches to the Cougars earning one team point. Tasha Dembo, Yusra Hegy and Jamie Stoppler were all victorious in their singles matches.

The Mustangs have lost one conference game to Winona State 5-2. SMSU has lost four nonconference games making their overall record 6-5. Senior Maegan Flight ranks third in number one singles in the NSIC as she is 7-3. Freshman Maja Louisa Harck sits in second place for number five singles with a 5-2 record. Silvia Poulakidas is first for number six singles as she has a 4-4 record. Jon Parker enters his second season as the Mustangs head coach and has gone 7-12 over his first two years.
OPPO RESEARCH – Minnesota State University - Mankato
MSUM is 2-12 on the season with a 1-8 conference record. Tyanna Washa is the Cougars number one singles competitor as she has a 2-12 record on the season. Lexi Miller is in third place with a 4-8 record for number three singles. Head coach Ryan Kucera enters his first season in charge of the Mavericks.

Returning players to the Marauders includes seniors Tasha Dembo, Yusra Hegy and Kelsey Lajom, juniors Kali Askvig and Jaime Stoppler, and sophomores Sarah Zielinski and Heidi Jacobson. UMary added three freshmen to the team with Ellie Schmidt, Samantha Purpura and Emily Patton.
UMARY PROJECTED TO FINISH FOURTH
UMary, led by the 2019 Northern Sun Coach of the Year Vida Saliendra, is projected to finish fourth in the NSIC after having one of their most successful seasons last year. The Marauders went 9-4 overall and 7-1 in the NSIC, finishing third in the NSIC before the season was canceled due to COVID-19.
