Big innings lead to split for Marauders against Wildcats

WAYNE, NE – A pair of big innings in the opening game carried the University of Mary baseball team to a doubleheader split against Wayne State College. The Marauders captured the opener 7-5 before the Wildcats rebounded for a 9-1 win in game two of a series originally slated to be played in Bismarck, ND, but moved to Wayne, NE, due to inclement weather concerns
 
 
GAME ONE University of Mary 7 Wayne State College 5
A pair of big innings back-to-back led he University of Mary to the win over Wayne State College in the opening game of the Northern Sun doubleheader. Down 4-1, the Marauders scored four times in the third inning and three times in the fourth to take the lead for good.
 
After a rough first inning fresh off last week's no-hitter and earning NSIC Pitcher of the Week honors, Jonathan Draheim once again found his groove. The Wildcats scored three runs in the first before Draheim settled in to limit Wayne State College to single runs in the third (unearned) and sixth innings. Through five starts this season Draheim is undefeated with a record of 5-0. He has also pitched at least six innings in every outing.
 
PIVOT POINT
After scoring four runs in the third inning – including two on a Spencer Gillund single - to tie the game 4-4, the Marauders grabbed control of the contest in the fourth. Shortly after a Tyrus Barclay triple scored Braxton Inniss, the Marauders catcher scored on a Calvin James double pulled to right field. James eventually scored on a wild pitch, the seventh straight run scored by the Marauders.

The Wildcats slowly but surely kept expanding their lead against the Marauders before pulling away with five runs scored over the last three innings. Tyrus Barclay and Derek Shoen combined for five hits from the top two spots in the UMary lineup but the rest of the team combined for two.
 
PIVOT POINT
With one out, two runners on base and a run on a Ty Jones infield single to close the gap to 4-1, a double play ended the Marauders hopes to pull closer. It was the first of three straight innings that UMary hit into a double play. Wayne State then scored three times in the seventh inning to seal the Wildcats win.
