Draheim drives Marauders to doubleheader road split with Warriors

WINONA, MN – Another impressive out by Jonathan Draheim propelled the University of Mary baseball team to a doubleheader spilt at Winona State University. The Marauders won the opener 9-3 behind a complete game effort from Draheim before suffering an 8-7 loss in the night cap.
 
GAME 1: University of Mary 9 Winona State University 3
Jonathan Draheim has won all three of his starts this season for the Marauders, pitching two 7-inning complete games and going six innings in his middle start. The sophomore righthanded struck out seven hitters and limited the Warriors to six hits, a walk and two earned runs. He was backed up by a Marauders offense that scored five runs in the third inning and four more in the seventh.
 
PIVOT POINT
Down 1-0 after the first inning, the Marauders took control of the contest in the third inning. After Tyrus Barkley led off with a double to right center, the Marauders catcher scored on a Braxton Inniss single and a throwing error to tie the game. Derek Shoen then blasted a 2-run home run to right center to push the Marauders ahead 3-1. A single by Calvin James kept the rally going with the third baseman eventually scoring on a Braeton Wixo base hit to left. Ty Jones closed out the Marauders outburst with a 2-out hit to drive home Wixo with the fifth and final run of the inning.

Jonathan Draheim was the winning pitcher in all three of his starts this season. He has two complete games and went six innings in the third, leaving him just one inning shy of three straight complete games.
 
GAME 2: Winona State 8 UMary 7
In a game that featured four lead changes and three ties, the Marauders fell just short of a doubleheader sweep. Playing from behind all game, the Marauders pulled even at 1-1, 4-4, and 5-5. After Winona State scored three times in the eighth inning, UMary was only able to respond with two runs in the top of the ninth.
 
PIVOT POINT
The Warriors broke open a game tied 5-5 with three runs in the eighth inning, all scoring with two outs. A double by Sam Kohlne scored the first run before a two-run double by Austin Savary down the left field line brought home two more much-needed insurance runs. The Marauders made a run in the ninth, scoring on a ground out and wild pitch, but couldn't find a third run to keep playing.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Braxton Inniss drove in four runs, posting a double and a walk in five plate appearances
  • Quentin Evers cracked a home run, scored twice and finished 2-for-3
  • Braeton Wixo walked twice and scored twice
  • Tyrus Barclay finished 2-for-4 and scored a run

  • Jayden Smith pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief, retiring all five hitters he faced

The Marauders have lost three of four games with the opponents scoring the winning run in their last at bats all three times.
 
ON DECK
UMary returns home this week to host Sioux Falls in a three-game series Friday and Saturday, April 2-3. The Marauders and the Cougars will play a single 9-inning game on Friday starting at 11 am. Saturday's doubleheader begins at 12 noon. A limited number of fans will be allowed to attend, with 100 tickets available at the gate for the general public.
