Late rallies sink Marauders hopes against Mavericks

MANKATO, MN – Starting pitchers Austin Wagner and Ty Jones delivered a pair of outstanding performances for the University of Mary but hopes for wins by the Marauders against one of the nation's top programs were dashed by a pair of late rallies for homestanding Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Mavericks posted a 2-1 walk-off win in the opener and completed a weekend sweep with a 5-1 victory in game two, scoring four times in the eighth inning.

GAME ONE #RV Minnesota State 2 UMary 1
Making his second start for the Marauders, lefty Austin Wagner was locked into a pitching duel against the Mavericks Cam Kline, with both hurlers allowing just one run through six innings. Wagner limited the explosive Minnesota State lineup to three hits in six innings of work. He struck out four hitters and walked just one. Cline, who pitched a 7-inning complete game, struck out 13 hitters and gave up just one run on two hits and a walk.

PIVOT POINT
Down to their last at bat, Derek Shoen doubled to break up Cline's no-hit bid and scored on a Cal James sacrifice fly to pull the Marauders into a 1-1 tie with the Mavericks in the seventh inning. The Mavericks wasted no time in responding. Jack Waletich doubled to lead off the home half of the seventh inning and scored the winning run on a one out single to right on an 0-2 pitch to Teddy Peterson for the walk-off win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Spencer Gillund and Derek Shoen had the Marauders only hits of the game and both came in the seventh inning
  • Gillund also had a stolen base
  • Austin Wagner allowed one run on three hits and a walk in 6.0 innings, striking out four
  • Cam Kline finished with 13 strikeouts for MSU and allowed just one run, two hits and a walk in 7.0 innings

GAME TWO #RV Minnesota State 5 UMary 1
Ty Jones was masterful on the hill for the Marauders, allowing just one run on three hits in five innings to nearly match Wagner's line from the opener. Andrew Brooks came out of the bullpen and tossed two more scoreless innings for UMary to keep the Marauders within striking distance. Once again, though, the Marauders lineup faced another tremendous starter for the Mavericks as Nick Altermatt fired seven scoreless innings.

PIVOT POINT
Facing a new pitcher to start the eighth inning, the Marauders hitters took advantage of the new hurler to tie the game. After Nathan Culley struck out the first UMary hitter of the inning, Calvin James walked, Shoen was hit by a pitch and Gillund singled through the left side to load the bases. Another MSU pitching change played out immediately in the Marauders favor as a wild pitch scored James to tie the game 1-1. UMary then stranded two runners in scoring position, setting up a big 8th inning for Minnesota State. A single, a walk and a hit batter loaded the bases for Jack Friedges, who delivered a 2-out grand slam to left center on a 1-0 pitch to break open the game.
