SWEEP! James powers Marauders past Golden Bears in NSIC opener

MINNETONKA, MN – Calvin James blasted three home runs on the day and the University of Mary hitters generated a combined five home runs and 11 extra base hits in a double header sweep of Concordia-St. Paul to open the Marauders 2021 Northern Sun schedule. UMary edged CSP 5-3 in the opener before running away with the night cap 9-2.

GAME 1 University of Mary 5 Concordia-St. Paul 3
The Marauders cracked four solo home runs in the game, including the game-winner by Ty Jones in the 7th inning and a pair of blasts by Calvin James. Jonathan Draheim took advantage of the Marauders power play, allowing just three runs on seven hits and a walk in six innings of work to pick up his second win of the season in two starts. The sophomore righty struck out three. Freshman Paxton Miller overpowered the Golden Bears in the seventh inning to preserve the win, striking out two of the three hitters he faced to earn his first save of the season.

PIVOT POINT
Tied 3-3 entering the bottom of the seventh, Jones hit a leadoff home run over the left field wall. Alec Battest followed with a single through the left side. Pinch-runner Matthew Krieger then took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a ground ball to the right side and came around to score on a Derek Shoen single to short. The extra run proved unnecessary as Miller set the Golden Bears down in order in the home half of the seventh.

STAT OF THE GAME
The four home runs are the second-most the Marauders have hit in a game since beginning NCAA play in 2007, bested only by the six UMary hit against Upper Iowa on April 28, 2007. The two home runs by Calvin James ties the Marauders NCAA-era single game record, which has been accomplished 11 times. James was also the last player to leave the park twice in a game when he hit two home runs against Southern Nazarene on February 1, 2020.

GAME 2 University of Mary 9 Concordia-St. Paul 2
The Marauders offense started early and kept producing often in UMary's 9-2 win to cap a doubleheader sweep. UMary scored two runs in four different innings as the Marauders pounded out 11 hits, including five for extra bases. Five UMary pitches combined to strike out 13 hitters and limit Concordia-St. Paul to one earned run in nine innings.

PIVOT POINT
After loading the bases and scoring just once in the first inning, the Marauders scored twice in each of the next two innings to take control of the contest. Starting pitcher Derek Shoen cracked a two-out two-run triple to right field to score Alex Kowski and Braxton Inniss. UMary scored two more runs with two outs on the third. Kowski singled home Dakota Finley before Ty Jones scored on a Tyrus Barclay ground rule double. The Marauders scored the first seven runs of the game.
