ST. JOSEPH, MO – A dominant pitching performance by lefthander
Austin Wagner and four relievers plus a late-game power display carried the University of Mary baseball team to a 7-2 win over homestanding Missouri Western. The UMary hurlers allowed just four hits in the nine-inning game while the Marauders bats produced five extra base hits.
A transfer from NCAA Division I Abilene Christian, Wagner shut down the Griffons offense in four innings of work. Matched against Brian Tan, who held the Marauders scoreless through five innings, Wagner limited the Griffons to one hit and one walk, retiring 12 of the 14 hitters he faced. The junior also struck out four hitters.
Liam Sommer came on next for the Marauders. He held Missouri Western scoreless for his first two innings and was charged with one run in 2.1 innings of work, earning the win in his first game for the Marauders.
Andy Brooks,
Jayden Smith and
Paxton Miller closed out the contest for the Marauders, combining to allow one run and striking out four in 2.2 innings of relief.
PIVOT POINT
After just missing scoring following a ty Jones triple in the fifth, UMary scored the first three runs of the game in the top of the sixth inning.
Tyrus Barclay led off with a solo home run to left field for the opening run of the game. Back-to-back doubles by
Derek Shoen and
Calvin James and a run scoring single to left by
Spencer Gillund gave the Marauders a 3-0 lead.
After the Griffons scored a run in the seventh, the Marauders extended their lead with a pair of runs in each of the eighth and ninth innings.

The Marauders remain on the road to face Southwest Baptist University for four games in Bolivar. MO, on March 5-6. Friday's doubleheader is slated for 2 pm. First pitch for Saturday's twin bill is set for 1 pm.
