VIRGINIA,MN - The University of Mary tennis team edged out Bemidji State University 4-3 in a close contest that saw Heidi Jacobson clinch a Marauders victory in the final match of the day. UMary improves to 2-0 after sweeping a pair of matches on the opening weekend of the season.
"I am proud of everyone as they played their best. We still need to improve in finishing points but overall it was a good day," UMary head coach Vida Saliendra said.
The Marauders claimed two out of three doubles matches. Kelsey Lajom and Jamie Stoppler took number two doubles 6-1. Heidi Jacobson and Kali Askvig dominated their competition with a 6-0 win in number three doubles. Tasha Dembo and Yusra Hegy lost number one doubles in a competitive contest 7-5.
Dembo was defeated by Sophie Groen 4-6, 2-6 in number one singles.
Hegy lost an incredibly close match in number two singles to Shaelyn Johnson 3-6, 6-3, 6-7.
Stoppler earned the Marauders first singles victory as she defeated Claudie Billand 6-3, 6-3 in number three singles.
In number four singles Lajom earned a win over Hannah Peterson 6-2, 6-4.
Askvig lost to Laney Rutkowski 3-6, 1-6 in number five singles.
Jacobson closed things out for UMary in an intense match as she won 6-2, 7-6 over Maggie Richardson in number six singles.
"Heidi kept her composure and played well as everyone was watching her match. It was nerve-racking but Heidi pulled through," said Saliendra.
The Marauders next match is Saturday, February 20, at 3 pm against Upper Iowa University in Fargo, ND.
