VIRGINIA, MN - The University of Mary tennis team dominated the University of Crookston in their season opener, sweeping the Golden Eagles 7-0.
"Our team hasn't played competitively since March 10, so everyone was eager and ready to compete today," said Marauders head coach Vida Saliendra, the reigning Northern Sun Coach of the Year.
The Marauders claimed all three doubles matches to earn one team point. Tasha Dembo and Yusra Hegy owned number one doubles 6-0. Kelsey Lajom and Jamie Stoppler took number two doubles 6-1. Heidi Jacobson and Kali Askvig rounded out doubles play with a 6-0 win in number three doubles.
Marauders NSIC Player to Watch Tasha Dembo defeated Tasha Achermann 6-0, 6-0 in number one singles.
Yusra Hegy claimed the win in number two singles against Michelle Swyter 6-0, 6-1.
Kali Askvig defeated Ashley Chomyn 6-1, 6-1 in number three singles.
In number four singles Heidi Jacobson dominated Karli Renney 6-0, 6-0.
Freshmen Samantha Purpura made her UMary debut, defeating Samantha Hartung 6-0, 6-0 in number five singles.
Sarah Zielinski picked up the 6-0, 6-0 win over Gabriela Pinto in number six singles.
The Marauders are back in action on Sunday, February 14, at 9 am against Bemidji State University in Virginia, MN.
