UMary Women's Basketball Begins Four Game Home Stand Against UMC And BSU

THIS WEEKEND
The University of Mary women's basketball team returns home to begin a four game home stand this weekend. The Marauders will kick the weekend off with a game on Friday, January 25 at 5:30 against Minnesota Crookston. They will follow that up with a game against Bemidji State on Saturday, January 26 at 3:30 PM 
 
LAST TIME OUT
The last time UMary took to the court was for a weekend road trip to Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State. The Marauders split the weekend winning the game against Sioux Falls and losing to SMSU. UMary took down Sioux Falls 70-63 behind dominant performances by Bohl, Askvig, and Gillette. The big three combined to score 57 points. Gabbie Bohl led the way with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Askvig added 19 points and Gillette pitched in 16. UMary then fell in a heartbreaker to SMSU by a score of 64-62. The Marauders held the lead early but could not close out the game, falling by just two points. Cassie Askvig led the way with a career high of 29 points. Bohl pitched in 19 points and 13 rebounds.
 
THE RECORD
The Marauders are 10-5 overall and 8-4 in NSIC play.
 
OPPO RESEARCH – MINNESOTA CROOKSTON
The Golden Eagles come into the game against UMary with a 10-8 record. UMC has struggled on the road so far this season going 1-4 on games not on their home court. Minnesota Crookston is led by one of the top players in the conference in Isieoma Odor. Odor averages 18.2 PPG and 9.7 RPG. Caitlyn Michaelis also averages double figures for the Golden Eagles putting up 11.8 PPG.
 
HISTORY LESSON
The Marauders are 16-8 against the Golden Eagles since UMary joined the Northern Sun in the 2006-07 season… UMary is 7-5 at home and 9-3 on the road vs. UMC… The Marauders snapped a 5-game losing streak to the Golden Eagles in the last regular season game of the 2016-17 season.
 
LAST MEETING
The last time UMary met UMC was during the final game of the 2017-18 season. The Marauders fell by a score of 72-67. Askvig, Bohl, Williams and Rotunda combined to score 63 of the Marauders 67 points with Askvig leading the way with 23 points and 11 rebounds. 
 
OPPO RESEARCH – BEMIDJI STATE
Bemidji State comes in on a two game winning streak. The Beavers are 4-12 overall. BSU has yet to win a game on the road this season going 0-6. Maria Appicelli leads the Beavers with 9.8 PPG.  
 
HISTORY LESSON
The Beavers and Marauders began their all-time series Nov. 30, 1984, an 80-75 win by BSU, before taking a 22-year break between meetings… UMary leads the series 20-4, and has won seven straight against BSU… The Marauders have swept the season series each of the last three years.
  
LAST MEETING 
The last time the Marauders met the Beavers was during the final home stand of the 2017-18 season. UMary dominated BSU by a score of 76-51. Askvig, Rotunda, and Bohl combined to score 51 points on the game with Askvig leading the way with 20 points and 15 rebounds. 
 
ALUMNI WEEKEND
The annual UMary men's and women's basketball alumni weekend welcomes back all former Marauders basketball players with a special emphasis for parts of the 1980s for both squads. The women's program is focused on the Cal Collins era, spanning the ten seasons of 1980-90. Under the direction of Collins as head coach, the Marauders won four WACND titles. The 1982-83 squad also won the District 12 title and was inducted to the Marauders Hall of Fame. Individuals Marauder Hall of Famers from that era include Patti Mercer, Dawn Schaeffer Seiler, Connie Morlock Schmidt, Kay Berg, Renae Amundson, Betsy Emerson and Barb Gelinske Metcalf. Three times the Marauders won at least 20 games in the 1980s

GETTING BUCKETS
UMary is third in the Northern Sun in points per game averaging 73.1. The Marauders have a plus 7.4 scoring margin over the opponents which ranks tied for fourth in the Northern Sun. Gabbie Bohl is first in the conference in scoring, averaging 20.1 PPG. Right behind her in third in the NSIC is Cassie Askvig who averages 18.3 PPG. The Marauders rank first in the conference in field goal percentage (46.1). Two Marauders rank in the top five in individual field goal percentage. Bohl ranks fifth with a field goal percentage of 51.2 percent. Askvig sits right in front of her in fourth with a field goal percentage of 51.6 percent. The Marauders ranks 19th in the nation if field goal percentage offense! Bohl ranks 23rd in the nation individually in scoring.
 
A HELPING PASS
The Marauders sure know how to share the ball. The team ranks fourth in the conference in assists, averaging 15.6 assists per game. Macy Williams ranks eighth in the conference averaging 3.1 assists per game. She ranks fourth in the conference in assists/turnover ratio. Tonya Dvorak comes in at 12th in the conference averaging 2.7 assists per game.
 
DEEEE-FENSE
The Marauders allow just 65.7 points/game, ninth in the NSIC. Teams are making just 37.8 percent of their shots against UMary, ranking them sixth in the conference in field goal percentage defense.
 
REJECTION
The Marauders are seventh in the NSIC in blocked shots at 3.33/game. Gabbie Bohl ranks eleventh in the NSIC averaging 1.1 blocks per game. Tonya Dvorak ranks tied for 12th averaging just under 1 block per game. 
 
DOWNTOWN
Averaging 7.4 treys/game, the Marauders rank fourth in the NSIC. Shooting 37.1 percent from behind the arc, UMary is first in the conference in three point shooting percentage. Coral Gillette is tied for first in the conference averaging 2.4 three pointers per game. Cassie Askvig leads the nation shooting 52.6 percent from behind the arc.
 
CHARITY STRIPE
Shooting 72.8 percent from the free throw line as a team this season the Marauders rank sixth in the NSIC. Cassie Askvig ranks fifth in the conference shooting 83.6 percent from the line. Gabbie Bohl is shooting 70.4 percent from the line to rank her 14th in the conference.
 
CRASHING THE GLASS
The Marauders rank third in the NSIC in defensive rebounds averaging 29.1 per game. The Marauders rank fifth in rebounding margin with a plus 4.1 RPG average. Two Marauders rank in the top ten in the conference in rebounds per game. Askvig ranks seventh, averaging 9.1 RPG. Right in front of her in fifth is Bohl who averages 9.7 RPG.
 
 
YOUNG BUT EXPERIENCED
The UMary women's basketball team features no seniors. What the Marauders lack in seniors they make up for in experience. Several of the current players have been making a big impact for the Marauders since they were freshman, including Gabbie Bohl who was named NSIC freshman of the year her freshman year, first team All-NSIC her sophomore year, and is the NSIC north preseason player of the year this season. 
 
LIVING UP TO EXPECTATIONS
Big expectations surround Gabbie Bohl coming into this season. The junior was named the NSIC North Preseason Player of the Year and has shown exactly why she received that honor so far this season. Bohl is averaging 20.1 PPG, 9.2 RPG, and 1.2 BPG. She was named the NSIC player of the week for her performance the weekend of December 7-8. She was named to the WWU Lynda Goodrich Classic All-Tournament Team for her performance in the teams two games in Washington. Bohl recorded her 1,000 career point in her first game of her senior year when she got a bucket and drew the foul. She would convert on the three point play to give herself 1,000 career points.
 
CLIMBING THE ALL TIME RANKINGS
Gabbie Bohl became the 18th Marauders to score her 1,000 career point. She reached the milestone just one game into her junior year. She has since moved into 10th on the all time rankings with a total of 1,280 career points. She recently passed former teammate Hannah Larson (2013-2017). Bohl will be tracking down Natalie Brunner (2001-05) who scored 1,293 career points. The junior forward has moved into 13th all time in career rebounds with 534. Cassie Askvig joins Bohl in the top 25 all time in career rebounds ranking tied for 14th with 519. Askvig also moves into 23rd all time in points scored with 922.
 
NEARING MILESTONES
Head Coach Rick Neumann is nearing the 100 win milestone. He is currently sitting at 99 wins. The UMary women's basketball program is nearing 700 wins. The Marauders need just nine more wins to reach this mark. 
 
SOUND ALL-AROUND
Cassie Askvig has been incredibly well rounded and consistent in nearly every aspect of the game for UMary. The junior is averaging 18.3 PPG, 9.2 RPG and 2.4 APG. Askvig is shooting 52.6 percent from behind the arc and 51.6 percent from the field.
 
NSIC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Gabbie Bohl and Cassie Askvig both have won NSIC Player of the Week this season. Bohl won the award for her 28.5 PPG and 13.5 RPG performance over a two game stretch. Askvig was given the award for her 18.5 PPG and 15.5 RPG performance over the past weekend.
