WINONA, MN – On a day more resembling the Northern Sun cross country championships than the outdoor track & field championships, the University of Mary's
Derek Myers dominated the only event on the opening day of the 2018 NSIC outdoor championships. The junior distance runner broke a conference record to win the 10,000 meter run while competing in wet mid 40s temperatures.
The native of Gillette, WY, covered the 10,000 meters in a scorching time of 30:20.75. An NCAA provisional qualifying clocking, Myers won the event by 7.29 seconds. He broke the NSIC record by 3.29 seconds, previously set by MSU Moorhead's Cody Christ in 2016 (30:24.04).
"To watch Derek create his 10K performance was nothing less than impressive," said Marauders head coach
Dennis Newell. "He not only picked up ten valuable points for his team but he set the tone for Day Two, providing inspiration for his teammates for the upcoming challenge. Derek's positive leadership is evident on so many levels within our program."
A tight race for the first 20 laps, Myers picked up the pace over the final five laps of the 10K run as he and Stephen Brown of Sioux Falls pulled away from the pack. Over the final lap Myers separated from Brown, who placed second in 30:28.04. Logan Burns of Augustana finished third in 30:55.56.
The NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships continue Saturday with field events starting at 10 am. and track events to follow at 1 pm. With the cancellation of Friday's preliminary events, all of Saturday's events run as finals.
