Emily Bichler combined for the University of Mary tennis team's lone win on opening day as the Marauders dropped an 8-1 decision to the University of Minnesota Duluth.
Taking to the court for the first time this season, the Marauders fell just short against the Bulldogs.
"Points at games were close but we just couldn't find a way to close out the games," said Marauders head coach

Kelsey Lajom and
Eileen Leong all had long rallies but we were unable put away our shots. Today our opponents were more consistent than we were."
Leong, a senior, and freshman Bichler earned a 9-7 win over Elsa Erickson and Katie Baasch playing #2 doubles.
Bolibruch, a sophomore, and Lajom, a freshman, dropped an 8-4 decision at #1 doubles while
Shanna Stevenson and
Lisa Anderson, the lone Marauders returning duo from last season, fell 8-3.
Down 2-1 after doubles play, the Marauders dropped all six singles matches in straight sets, though many of the matches were closer than the final score indicated.
Bolibruch, moved up to #1 singles after playing #2 last year, fell 6-0, 6-2 to Shelby Benkofske. Lajom, in her first collegiate singles competition, fell 6-4, 6-0.
Leong fell 6-3, 6-2 at #3 singles.
A third freshman,
Julie Donnelly, opened her career with a 6-1, 6-1 loss at #6 singles.
The Marauders complete the weekend with a neutral court match against St. Cloud State at Courts Plus in Fargo, ND, on Sunday, Feb, 11, at 9 am.
