UMary Women's Basketball Kicks Off Conference Play Against Minot State This Saturday

THIS WEEKEND

The University of Mary women's basketball team hosts Minot State University in a Northern Sun contest on Saturday, Dec. 1. The Marauders and Beavers will open conference play in the McDowell Activity Center at 3:30 PM

LAST TIME OUT

The Marauders battled two tough cross country foes at the Western Washington Lynda Goodrich Classic over Thanksgiving Weekend. The Marauders opened up play against a tough Western Washington team, falling by one point 73-72. They followed that up with a dominant 15 points win over Saint Martin's, 62-47.

THE RECORD

The Marauders are 2-1 overall.

OPPO RESEARCH – MINOT STATE UNIVERSITY

Minot State University comes into the game against the Marauders with a 4-1 record. Madison Wald and Mariah Payne are both averaging over 14 points per game for the Beavers. Minot State leads the conference in field goal percentage making 46.3 percent of their shots. The Beavers do an excellent job of sharing the ball leading the conference in both assists (20.4 APG) and assist/turnover ratio (1.6)

HISTORY LESSON

HISTORY LESSON In a series that stretches back to the mid 1970s, the University of Mary holds a commanding 51-38 edge in the all-time series against Minot State University… The series went on hiatus when the Marauders moved to NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun in 2006 and resumed when the Beavers began NCAA play in 2011-12. Since renewing their Highway 83 rivalry, the series between the Marauders and Beavers is deadlocked at 7-7 overall and 6-6 in NSIC play… The Marauders recently posted recent season sweeps in 2014-15 and 2016-17… UMary is 3-4 at home and 4-3 on the road against Minot State over the last seven years… UMary has won the last two meetings at the McDowell Activity Center and 3-of-4 overall.

LAST MEETING The Marauders put on a show the last time they took on Minot State, downing the Beavers by a score of 70-45. The team caught fire from three shooting over 50 percent on the game. Macy Williams led all Marauders with 20 points, shooting 6-7 from behind the three point arc. Gabbie Bohl added 14 points.

GETTING BUCKETS

UMary leads the Northern Sun in points per game averaging 82.3. The Marauders have a plus 22.7 scoring margin over the opponents which ranks second in the Northern Sun. Gabbie Bohl is third in the conference in scoring, averaging 20.7 PPG. Right behind her in fourth in the NSIC is Cassie Askvig who averages 19 PPG.

A HELPING PASS

The Marauders sure know how to share the ball. The team ranks second in the conference is assists, averaging 18.7 assists per game. Cassie Askvig ranks third in the conference averaging four assists per game.

DEEEE-FENSE

The Marauders allow just 59.7 points/game, eighth in the NSIC. Teams are making just 32.5 percent of their shots against UMary, ranking them second in the NSIC in field goal percentage defense.

  

REJECTION

The Marauders are first in the NSIC in blocked shots at 5.3/game. Tonya Dvorak ranks second in the NSIC averaging 2.3 blocks per game. Gabbie Bohl and Cassie Askvig each average 1.0 blocks/game to tie them for 10th.

DOWNTOWN

Averaging 10.3 treys/game, the Marauders are second in the NSIC. Shooting 40.3 percent from behind the arc, UMary leads the conference in three point shooting percentage. Coral Gillette leads the conference averaging 3.3 three pointers per game. Cassie Askvig in right behind her in third with 2.7 three's per game.

CHARITY STRIPE

Shooting 74.7 percent from the free throw line as a team this season the Marauders rank fifth in the NSIC. Freshman Tonya Dvorak leads the conference shooting a perfect 100 percent from the line. Dvorak has made all eight of her attempts.

BIG THREE

The Marauders have three athletes who are averaging double digit points throughout the first three games of the season. Gabbie Bohl leads all Marauders with 20.7 PPG, Cassie Askvig averages 19 and Coral Gillette averages 11.7.

YOUNG BUT EXPERIENCED

The UMary women's basketball team features no seniors. What the Marauders lack in seniors they make up for in experience. Several of the current players have been making a big impact for the Marauders since they were freshman, including Gabbie Bohl who was named NSIC freshman of the year her freshman year, first team All-NSIC her sophomore year, and is the NSIC preseason player of the year this season. 

LIVING UP TO EXPECTATIONS

Big expectations surround Gabbie Bohl coming into this season. The junior was named the NSIC North Preseason Player of the Year and has shown exactly why she received that honor so far this season. Bohl is averaging 20.7 PPG, 9.7 RPG, and 1.0 BPG. She was named to the WWU Lynda Goodrich Classic All-Tournament Team for her performance in the teams two games in Washington. Bohl recorded her 1,000 career point in her first game of her senior year when she got a bucket and drew the foul. She would convert on the three point play to give herself 1,000 career points.

CLIMBING THE ALL TIME RANKINGS

Gabbie Bohl became the 18th Marauders to score her 1,000 career point. She reached the milestone just one game into her junior year. She has since moved into 17th on the all time rankings with a total of 1,040 career points. She recently passed her former teammate Dani Williams who scored 1,012 points during her career. Bohl will be tracking down Ali Collins (2010-13) next, Collins has 1,075 career points. The junior forward has moved into 28th all time in career rebounds with 417. Cassie Askvig joins Bohl in the top 30 all time in career rebounds with 408.

NEARING MILESTONES

Head Coach Rick Neumann is nearing the 100 win milestone. He is currently sitting at 91 wins. The UMary women's basketball program is nearing 700 wins. The Marauders need just 17 more wins to reach this mark. 

SOUND ALL-AROUND

Cassie Askvig has been incredibly well rounded and consistent in nearly every aspect of the game for UMary. The junior is averaging 19 PPG, 8.7 RPG, and 1.0 BPG. Askvig is shooting 53.3 percent from behind the arc and 47.6 percent from the field.

The University of Mary women's basketball team kicks off a day packed full of UMary vs Minot State rivalry games. Immediately after the women's game, the men's basketball team will take on the Beavers at 5:30 PM. At 7 PM the UMary hockey team will take on Minot State for the first time in program history.
